No in traffic failures for the Scot all year then this. Great shame. Hope it can be moved to be quickly repaired.

Currently whizzing back to Euston with an ETA much earlier than the original tour finish but not behind SG.

I must say, SD has really worked hard on the PR during this trip and hospitality generally. I've only been on bits of it but those around me have also been upbeat.

As for WCRC, well let's put it down to bad luck that SG has failed on me twice with the same problem. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt over not knowing at the planning stage that there would be a problem with watering SG. Let's assume that they miscalculated how far it was from Rugby to Euston to Southall on a tender of water. Lets assume that the DL was a last minute necessity

Let's just assume that these are things that need to be considered when you book a steam charter with them in future and take it from there......

Real shame she failed at Rugby, but don't forget these are machines from the past. To have them running on our national network is still a treat.

Well done to everyone involved for arranging such a different tour, lets hope the 'Scot' makes it to Euston soon.

On the plus side, we had a nice dash south from Preston. 60 at Balshaw Lane and only down to 54 over Coppull. Through Warrington at 73 in 28.5 min before the extended checks around Preston Brook leading up to Weaver Junction. Then a dawdle to Crewe.

And a first for me after Crewe. That is, going over Whitmore at 66 with absolutely no sound from the loco as heard from the second coach.

And lets not bother to book a steam charter. Seriously, wife and friends want to do a steam trip next year. Based on this years performance to date, I really can't see me saying "Yes thats a good idea"

It certainly seems more of a lottery than it should be. I don't maintain steam locos so I'm in no position to know the complexities of how difficult it is to keep loco X operational and reliable compared with, say, loco Y. But I do study form and there are patterns. How on earth any tour operator can plan ahead defeats me.

Perhaps the future is simply to say.."We plan to have this trip hauled by a steam locomotive" and leave it at that!

I shot this footage of the train coasting(?) through Stafford about thirty down this afternoon. Not much in the way of steam and smoke, but at least the diesel didnt seem to be pushing...

I was sat at Leighton Buzzard for 2 hours waiting, then had planned to head to Euston. Can't win them all. Such a shame she failed.

According to a passenger who got on our train to Euston at Watford, they're hoping to move the loco down to Southall either tonight or very early tomorrow morning to fix the problem. Facebook gen also says loco failed with a hot ashpan.

A short postscript to the non appearance of a Scot in Euston for the first time in 50+ years.

All credit to Steam Dreams for arranging the option of passengers transferring to a Virgin service at Rugby. Yes, the West Coast loco was broken but rescue was only a train's length away (rather than at Southall had it happened otherwise). So there was an immediate solution to get people home, albeit with a train change at Watford, but probably not much more than three quarters of an hour delay overall. No pressing need to do it therefore.

    Gold star awarded.

But that makes it less easy to trigger the exclusion clause i.e. "best efforts to ensure that the train will be hauled by a steam loco" is more onerous than "best efforts that it will be hauled by loco X", as once loco X becomes unavailable, that test is met.

    That says you're jinxed!!

Moral, never book on the same tour as Big Al with WCRC & 46115............. :Jawdrop:

Had hoped to go out this evening & see it come through Carpenders Park - would've made a great sight, but, hey ho.
