    Hello all,

I am looking for a nameplate to complete a little project I am working on. If anyone can point me towards the owner of the nameplates for Pyrland Hall or the location of any surviving cab sideplates for 4961 then I would be most grateful.

    kind regards

    Brian Fraser

I believe that the chaps at http://www.sheffieldrailwayana.co.uk/ have some sort of database, but whether they are willing to divulge, I know not. Maybe they will pass on a message if they know of the owner(s).

Thanks for the suggestion but I doubt they produce solid brass plates at a scale of 12 inches to the foot.

    ;)

Solid brass GWR nameplates? They are fabricated with brass letters and beading on a steel backplate. ;)

Appears nameplate never sold at auction, but cabside fetched £2530 in Dec 2000 at BRA auction.

One of the nameplates is listed in Ian Wrights book - 'Nameplates on Public Display' as being at Kings College Junior School (as above) The book has some age so I agree that it is probably worth contacting the school.

That's the location of one plate however I am trying to find the other one. I saw it a few nights ago and gave me the idea of reuniting them on a loco for a steam Gala. The other one must be sitting on someone's wall.

Ok good luck with that. Loco plate owners are not usually that keen on disclosing that they own specific plates - for obvious reasons. As the plate has never appeared in public auction, I guess its in the hands of someone who has owned it for very many years.

The one at Pyrland Hall is slightly damaged as it was hit by a road roller many years ago, when the road leading up to the school was been redone, so if it was stolen at any time and came up for sale they would know it was their one.

That would be a charitable but unwise assumption, especially for GWR plates. Many modellers have been surprised to find that the position of words and spacing (and even shape) of letters can vary widely between rival manufacturers of the same nameplate, and none of them match photos of the original (whether attached to the locomotive, or on a wall).
