I hope this reply was not directed at me ? I called it a GREAT PIECE OF FILM if you care to read my post correctly, my reply was to Mr Mellish, when I said "you are missing nothing" to HIM, it was in regard to him, NOT watching it, because there IS no commentary, I am afraid you have shot yourself in the foot my friend ! Read Mr Melish's post first, then my reply, and you will see, great shame, the film was excellent...

I'll attempt to moderate on this. It's a great shame that you didn't take notice of my comment earlier 'Great piece of film, is there a part two?' Rather than a picky comment about the sound, which has been stated isn't relevant. This unique record of 46256 in all her glory has now been denied to the vast majority of enthusiasts, of a railtour that is considered to be one of the greatest of all time.

What a very strange reaction! I'm not just referring to this particular post, but to all by @railtour_films today. If you've got interesting films that you want to show to the world, go ahead and do it. Don't be put off by a clumsy complaint.

I know from experience that the subject of adding sound-tracks to historic films is contentious. Having made a choice to add one, or not, you should have the courage of your convictions, since you'll never please all the people. Personally, I don't like spoken commentaries, since once I've heard them, I find them irritating on repeated listening - but that's just me.

I'm sorry that railtour_films has taken exception to my complaining about the music and thereby deprived everyone else.

I do find extraneous and irrelevant music very annoying, and I do not understand why people go to the trouble of adding it. But I would have liked to watch the film if only I could have been confident that muting wouldn't result in my missing something that I would want to hear.

i am not amazed that out of 23 views nobody thought it was worth saying thank you, not to worry now as its back on private, pointless spending time making videos and nobody even says thank you, only one person, nothing on youtube, so lets stop wasting my time

Got to be honest, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion you have and assume no one likes your videos. I'm sat on you tube right now looking at a couple of established and quite well known users on there (I won't say who but chosen at random). Looking at a couple of their videos one has a video with 1557 views and 33 likes, another 5990 views with 19 likes and another with has 384,211 views and 518 likes. Setting it to private just means that no one can view it now so unfortunately I will never see it which is a shame as I am sure our members would be interested in viewing them. :)

Yes, try not to take the criticism to heart- we've all suffered/benefited from it (criticism) on here at some point. After all, as you have said, watchers only had to turn the sound off...

Youtube does not guarantee loads of views with someone's first video as a rule unless it is a once in a lifetime shot or some other unusual event . I can get dislikes galore with no reason as to why so no need to take the hump because nobody comments . Nat press can be a very good way of advertising your youtube account I find .

Whether you find the soundtrack irritating I guess depends on when you were born.

I stick by my original criticism, BUT that was my personal opinion, clearly not everyone's opinion, and certainly no reason to take umbrage and make the video either entirely unavailable or available only to designated persons. Please make it generally available again, with or without music.

@railtour_films: 4 likes on here don't count, then? You need quite a thick skin if you post anything in public. Your stuff's interesting and particularly relevant to this thread, and people on here are keen, and pleased, to see it. It's up to you, of course, whether you feel generous enough to post more or not, but I'm afraid that having a strop when you're not showered with praise for doing so may be counter-productive.

I've tried copying old cine myself a few times, but I've not posted anything publicly yet, for a number of reasons. Either the original isn't interesting enough to make up for the dodgy quality of the original, or the transfer wasn't good enough (early attempts on an old projector), or I haven't yet had the time to do a thorough job on post-production - soundtrack, colour/balance corrections, edit out the little glitches, etc. Maybe we should start a thread in the Photo/video area to discuss the trials and tribulations of publishing archive film on the Web?
