Brilliant day. 31806, Wells and 61994 all put in awesome performances on the 1 in 49. The day ended rather nicely in Twickenham! That's the last time I'll mention it.

I've heard of the supposed problem with crossing a long train at Glaisdale before but I think it is only a problem in someones imagination. I was on the Skegness to Whitby charter today - 10 coaches and two locos. There was no problem crossing the 2 car Northern train at Glaisdale. It would only be impossible if both trains exceeded to length of the loop.

I like the penultimate track of 61994 sounding like a V2 on the Waverley route. I wonder what caused that as she sounds fine on the tracks either side?

Pulled back too far on the reverser.
We used to do it but it seems that it is now considered to be a risk. Insufficient overrun if the long train is in first.
I'm surprised that you could get 10 + T&T inside at Whitby in either platform.

We were in Glaisdale five minutes before the northern service arrived. Overrun does not seem to be an issue at this type of crossing loop. It is not too dissimilar to Glenfinnan where a six coach afternoon"Jacobite" that just fits in the loop crosses the seven coach morning train which doesn't fit.
At Whitby we arrived in Plat 1, where with the loco up close to the stops we just got the rear of the 8th coach on the platform, with the last 2 and loco off the end. After the NYMR service left (and had returned the token at Grosmont) we shunted across to Plat 2 where , with the loco again up close to the stops, the entire train fitted onto the new platform.

Sorry to digress from the gala but some may find this of interest.

Thanks for that Pete - I assumed that had been the sequence of manoeuvres at Whitby with the charter.

I have a feeling that at least part of the issue with running a longer train to Battersby and back is the location of the Battersby bound Stop Board, which is considerably short of the actual fouling point of the loop (the Whitby bound one is basically at that point). Hence, when the Battersby bound train actually remains foul of the loop but has to surrender its token. (There is no such thing as "Station Limits" on Driver Operated Token Block). Also remember that in theory a 5 coach train with a loco on each end is as long as a 6 coach train and we did tended to shorten the Battersby trains even when running 2 sets on many occasions for the same reason. The need to steward every coach also encourages avoiding an excess length train.

A different version of the same problem arose when there was a Charter in April, which lead to the different sequence of operation and loss of an NYMR Whitby service yesterday - which was replaced by the charter conveying NYMR passengers between Grosmont and Wwhitby and visa-versa. (The charter meant there was never any path for an NYMR Battersby service on Saturday). In April, the Northern unit passed the Charter at Glaisdale as yesterday, but then the charter waited at Glaisdale while the NYMR 12:45 came out from Whitby to Grosmont - fine in theory, but with the charter longer than the loop, the Northern train was "trapped" in the Battersby bound platform and couldn't leave until the NYMR train was inside at Grosmont and the charter able to progress to Whitby. Hence, yesterday the NYMR departure had to wait at Whitby for the Charter arriving, so it could vacate the loop at Glaisdale as soon as possible and "release" the service train.

An enjoyable day today, stunning weather conditions and a great line up. Time was lost early on when the 31806 struggled on the bank and needed banking assistance (although did it on its own later in the day). But this didn't spoil the day and all it meant was some changes to the roster with the Q6 & K4 taking different turns from advertised and the first of the Whitby-Goathland trains terminating at Grosmont. Couple of pictures with full gallery and video to follow later.

Be nice to see a "Battersby" Gala, where for 1x weekend NYMR runs 2/3 sets (whatever the line can handle) along this section crossing at Glaisdale. Been over twice this year for such runs and its certainly something special that they have. Guessing it depends how you'd impact upon Northern's service?

Star of the show at the NYMR Autumn Gala, SR WC Bullied Class 4-6-2 'Wells' approaches Levisham with the Sunday Diner. This engine is a credit to the lads at Haworth KWVR sounding superb with a paintjob to match

    31806-6b.jpg

SR Maunsell U Class 2-6-0 No. 31806 working away from Grosmont, unfortunately it came to a stop just above Esk Valley and had to get a shove from the Q6 to get to Goathland

Makes me wish I went now....

(To be fair it looks quaint and people are right to praise the condition Wells was turned out in. Each to their own....)
