As there seems to be quite a few "New builds", I was wondering if there are any locomotives that are going to be un-rebuilt or could be Un-rebuilt to there original standard, or to be different class locomotive entirely.
I know the Bluebell are un-rebuilding there Standard class 2 2-6-0 to a tank version 2-6-2T, and there's have been plans to un-rebuild a Merchant Navy class locomotive. Another one could be U class 31806 which could be in-rebuilt to a K class or if not possible a W class.

Also is the term "Un-rebuilt" correct or should it be original, converted back etc.

I'd err that the transformation of 78059 into 84059 is more conversion that un-rebuilding as the design was never rebuilt

31806 was originally a "River" class tank engine . To use it as a foundation for anything else is probably a little unfair on the owners

A Merchant Navy could be restored to original condition and current candidate is 35011

Both Royal Scots could of course re overhauled into original Parallel boiler configuration

With costs today I'd prefer that "missing" examples are better built a new than convert an existing loco

I suppose the conversion of Maindy Hall to 2999 is possibly a generic unrebuilding of sorts as it reverses the works done to Saint Martin to create a Hall from the Saint.

One that I've always thought of as a retrograde 'un-rebuild' was that of former GNR Atlantic No. 251 to original condition, i.e. non-superheated and slide valve cylinders. It was only after they had been fitted with piston valves and 32 element superheaters that they made a name for themselves in the 1930s working the Pullman trains. Also, one of them even hauled the 'Coronation' after stepping in to replace a failed A4.

78059 to 84030 is really a conversion, not "un-rebuilding" (which implies bringing back to original form).

One I'd like to see would be re-boilering a Stroudley Terrier (and other various work) with a Stroudley boiler to go back to original form. Even more, I'd like to see the Stirling O1 reboilered with a domeless Stirling boiler and round-top cab to create an SER O class, but that would be a retrograde step in performance terms and I suspect has a probability not unadjacent to zero of ever occurring.

I know they did their best work with the superheaters, but they weren't exactly bad locos as built. The bit of the 251 'un-rebuild' that was really retrograde was leaving in a boiler with superheater flues, making a fine mess of the draughting and steaming capability.

Beachy Head, when finished, should give us an idea of the capability of a late-condition Ivatt Atlantic, since with the exception of the over-size cylinders that's pretty much what she is, and in the case of the boiler being used, exactly so.

Won't the Patriot satisfy those after something with a Fowler boiler ?, the rebuilt scots are far more handsome than as built.

    Isn't 6229 a prime example? I know it's cosmetic rather than mechanical...

Unrebuilt is quite quite horrible. What's wrong with rebuilt. Otherwise you get in a chain of deplorable syntax in some circumstances.
The GWR rebuilt some Dukes as Bulldogs. Later on they rebuilt some (later design) Bulldogs as Dukes (and called them a new class to do some dubious swapping of money between accounts). I suppose its theoretically possible that one day 9017 might get rebuilt as a Bulldog. Now what, would that be an unrebuilt rebuild, a rebuilt unrebuild or maybe a rebuild rebuilt, or a rebuilt rebuild?

In theory, SRPS' favourite J36 No. 65243 'Maude' could be unrebuilt, removing the larger boiler and improved cab protection (among many other smaller differences) that were implemented by Reid during thw rebuilds of the class, giving you an as built Holmes NBR Class C. However, no point in removing a significant chunk of power and useful additions the rebuild gave the loco.

Yes, 'un-rebuilt' implies it wasn't rebuilt in the first place. 'Rebuilt' applies even if the locomotive is reverting back to an earlier form.

    How about "reverted"?

Or to use an often used phrase "restored" as in "restored to original specification".

Making it far too difficult, good people!

While you're pondering the grammar, don't forget FR 20.

This is true. The prefixes "un" and "non" both mean "not". For example unwell means not well.

So unrebuilt means not rebuilt. Why is this a problem? Just asking like.
