Harold Gasson in his book "Firing Days" relates some stories about the S160's , introduced on the Great Western in 1942, in particular the sudden and explosive release of steam from the particular type of safety valves fitted to these engines, and the damage caused to some overhanging infrastructure such as station awnings by that release of steam.

Not too sure on livery yet but I'll post on here once a decision has been made.

Not too sure where it's being overhauled but there is a Facebook group named 'friends of 2253' which posts regular updates of the loco.

Adam Dalgleish Engineering in Stockton is doing the boiler and Maurice Johnson is doing the mechanicals. The loco has had an overhaul shed built for it at Adam Dalgleish's yard.

Lucky for the Railway. The S160's, and 2253 in parrticular, are fantastic locos, well capable of handling anything that you will be able to throw at it. They have a grate area slightly larger than a 9F so need plenty of coal to get them going and the lack of a combustion chamber doesn't help in keeping the smoke down!
That'll be a trio of ex NYMR locos down there then. (4277, 75014 & now 2253). I need to be offering my services!

Oh dear that's a retrograde step. Shame to spoil the line up like that.

Would a BR number and crest on it help?

They have now gone down in my extensions.
They were doing so well over the last few years with the Hall then a Manor
Hope they decide on something good in 2016.
Don't think I'll be going that way to see an S160 in 2017 unless there is something good on the Torbay Express like 6024's return to mainline

The S160 will be a superb addition to the fleet and I'm sure will encourage more visitors than it discourages. Give me that over a 42xx any day!

Totally agree. Still haven't sampled an S160 yet (Im rather hoping Big Jim pays a visit to the SVR at some point!) but you cant knock any agreement that puts a loco back in use and gives it a home. Just because it hasnt got a copper cap and wasnt built in Wiltshire. What do some people want?

There are several coming in by 2017 and others which could be done if the funding package was there.

Well offer your services as negotiator/mediator to obtain the services of these locomotives then, if it really winds you up that much.

Got to laugh at some of these responses.. toys out of prams because a non gwr / br loco is coming and will spoil the authentic atmosphere or something! What about the ex DMU coaches that are used and painted in choc / cream, they are hardly authentic either!

Will have to a pay a visit in 2017 when 2253 is running.

Not saying I am against S160 in any shape or form, infact me and my mate always said it would be amazing to have one there and never thought we'd see the day! But the coaches are just that.. coaches. In fact, I like seeing the DMU ones right behind locos when they do on the odd occasion, behind 4555 they look like GWR carriages.

The number of coaches the railway has ( I think about 18) they could make of a rake of carmine and cream to run behind the S160 and 75015.

A S160 is a great choice for the line. Not only will it sound good but it has a good link to the area as South Devon played a big role in D Day. Also S160s worked in South Devon during the war so perhaps it is just appropriate for the line as a Manor. Hopefully it will appear in authenthic wartime livery to remind all of the important role the railway played then.

For a large percentage of DSR passengers the fact that it is a steam loco will be all they wish for.

If Heritage railways were stipulated only to operate those locos known to have run on their lines in pre 1948 days then a good many would have a very depleted loco stud. ;)

It doesn't wind me up particularly & nothing wrong with expressing views either way. Respect for that seems to be in short supply here at times.

No point in a debate, my own time is far better spent working on the two overhauls I am currently rather heavily involved with pretty well 6 days a week at times. Oh and yes they both happen to be GW ones.
