AA Box.

Much to my surprise, I came across this old AA box whilst on holiday in Wales last month :

Juxtaposition - or is the (English) AA seen as the enemy ?

 

There are allegedly 19 still in existence by the roadside, despite being decommissioned in 2002.

 

I think that one survives at the bottom of Garrowby hill on the A166 York - Driffield Rd.

 

One of the survivors is located at the junction of the A50 and A 556 at Mere in Cheshire.

I think I still have my key to the AA RAC boxes somewhere, do the existing boxes still contain a phone?

 

They are no longer in use so I assume that the phones have been removed. There are several others pictured on Flickr and one of them clearly shows that it is locked with a mortice dead lock, so the old AA / RAC keys wouldn't be any good on that one. Can't speak for the others.

Those of us in the west country might suggest that box 137 at the top of Porlock Hill is a pretty well-known example...

Wouldn't it have been better off at the bottom, at least you could have free-wheeled back down to it ;

 

no decommissioned back in 2002.
