LMS design Sleeper for scrap

It is often quoted that this carriage or that carriage has had its asbestos content removed but I often have doubts that this can be correct.

When the problem was first identified in the late 1970s by BR, they would have ideally liked to scrap every vehicle that might be contaminated. This though was not going to be possible and a program of striping DMU and EMU vehicles that had a long term future was undertaken at various BREL workshops. The vehicles involved had their interiors gutted and came out of the process as little more than shells. This though was not a problem as they were all subject to a major refurbishment with new interiors although some fittings were re-used. Even then, when these same vehicles were scrapped years later pockets of asbestos were discovered. This proved how difficult it is to completely remove all the asbestos present.

I was under the impression for many years that the Mark I sleeping cars used for the Queen of Scots / Royal Scotsman and Royal Train actually had the asbestos removed. I have now been convinced otherwise and the disposal of former Royal Train Mark I Staff Sleeping Car 2908 a few years ago supported the fact. Some may have had some removed, the easy to get at stuff, but to do a thorough job a full strip out of the whole carriage would have been needed and then some bits in nooks and crannies might have been inaccessible. This is probably the case with the LMS design First Class Sleeping Cars mentioned. It would be interesting to know if a recent full asbestos survey has been undertaken on any of them in recent years and if so what it concluded.

The former NYMR LMS SLF had the blue comprehensively removed from under the floor. However the interior still contained white asbestos board in the partitions as far as I'm aware.

The LMS vehicles had the insulation exposed under the floor while the Thompson ones (like mk1 vehicles I believe) had it contained in a sandwich in the floor.

The NYMR Met-Camm Pullman cars had, if I recall correctly, up to two and a half tons of asbestos removed from each of them.

I have to say, it might be interesting if the SVR ever felt so inclined, to hire the WSR's sleeper for a gala, and attach it to the all night trains for a one-off. It would be a fun experience, you never know if folk would buy into it...

The big but... What would transport costs be? The sleeper sleeps 8; that gives you a maximum of 16 ticket sales over a weekend; you would have to split two lorry journeys (plus whatever hire fee was agreed) over 16 tickets. I suspect you would be looking at several hundred pounds per person per night ...

No I do not currently volunteer
The Hawksworth's being 1st class only have 10 berths. They are big vehicles on 6 wheel bogies, approx. 40 tons for only 10 passengers. I don't know what @paulhitch would have to say about that! :) Actually I have a very good idea what he would say :)

Not only that but where do you put the volunteers who are using it for overnight accommodation?

Neither of the Hawksworth sleepers on the Valley have working toilets or boilers in the attentants rooms. Whilst I haven't inspected the one at Arley for a while, the one at Kidderminster is having attention to the guttering, window beading and paintwork on the corridor side.

Both are used for overnight accomodation so if they were used for passengers, alternative accomodation would be need.
