If one has a number of circular rings, each one being slightly smaller than the last and if the largest is stood on it's edge vertically, on a level surface and the others side by side, largest first, then you'll get the preferred taper boiler shape. However, I don't think the shape is an oblique cone but some other geometrical shape which is impossible to roll and therefore a rollable cylinder is made an bashed about to make it fit the circular smokebox and firebox..

Having just read the original again (always a good idea) it seems to me that the alterations to the rolled shape they are talking about are not to make an elliptical cross section round but to "untaper" the very ends of the cone so as to permit a sealed overlapping joint with the next components. Their phrase eccentric cone appears to me to be a synonym for oblique cone.

This is a fascinating discussion. It would be possible in principle to make a short transition piece for the end of the boiler cone. The transition piece would be, in itself, a truncated cone, with the axis set horizontally and the same internal angle as the boiler cone . If a joint is then made between the transition piece and the boiler, with the joint perpendicular to half the angle of the slope of the axis of the boiler, the ellipses of the two pieces would be similar and could be joined directly. Since the axis of the transition piece is horizontal, the joint with the smokebox would be circular.

I think I understand it now! The tapered boiler section is an oblique cone where, if stood on it's base and viewed from vertically above it, the point would be vertically above a point on the circumference of the base. The line between the point and the point on the circumference would be the bottom of the boiler and both ends would be circular. Simples..

    How do you make though?

It's a lot easier to just swage the last few inches of the ends back to parallel and trim them to vertical, the last part being done when the sheet steel is cut to size and shape to start with. That's how it was done back in the day.

It would be made in the same way as rolling the sections of the coned boiler, but it would be necessary to get the geometry right.

Another way of thinking about it would be to consider a cone, with the axis vertical. If you made an oblique cut through it, you would have two pieces, and the both of the cut faces would have the same ellipse. You could then rotate one part by 180 degrees, and put it back together. The ellipses would still match, but there would be an angle part of the way along the length of the cone. This is the same principle as the transition piece for the boiler.

I don't understand how a cone shape is rolled..

Lots of clips on You-tube on rolling cones you could try this one but there are many more - and this one at least has some music of what is somewhat a tedious process !

This one is only 4mm plate but it gives the principal of the process

I don't think that would give you a parallel section, though, so it would still need a big hammer and you've introduced a welded joint, to boot.

'Submerged arc welded' and 'swagged' described in this months 82045 update both suggest these two processes have or will be used. Good to see such positive and rapid progress.

It will be interesting to see how long the two boiler components languish on the 'wrong side of the tracks', before construction commences.

As i understand. There is a slot booked within the works and boiler shop. Im sure 82045 can confirm when this is.

If you then make a cut through the inclined section of the cone (actually horizontal on the locomotive), perpendicular to it's axis, the cut face will be a circular, which can join up with the smokebox.

I agree that the extra welded joint is necessary, but not the big hammer. I also agree that the old method may be easier, if you are familiar with it.

Following the success of our first special train in April (it raised the best part of £5,000 towards the boiler appeal), Bryan Clarke and his little group are organising another fundraiser, “The Eardington Flyer”, which will run on Friday 22nd April 2016. Funds raised will again go towards the boiler appeal and also to our 'motion' account. The train will again feature Collett 0-4-2 tank 1450 heading a train of vintage GWR stock. This time, we are doing a longer round trip, as far as Highley, where the engine will take water and run round its train. We then proceed back to Eardington for a stop of about one and a half hours and a variety of nice jollies again, before returning to Bridgnorth. Departure time from Bridgnorth is 11.00 a.m., and we expect to be back there by 3.00 p.m.

Ticket price remains unchanged at £19.65, but this time we are offering a chance for three lucky winners to have a footplate ride. If you would like to be entered for the draw, please add £5.00 to your remittance and your name will be placed in a hat. First prize will be Bridgnorth-Highley, second Highley-Eardington and third Eardington-Bridgnorth. Better odds than the National Lottery, and worth a flutter! Cheques, for £19.65 or £24.65 ('premium ticket'), should be made out to The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust. 1450’s footplate can best be described as cosy, but the forward view through the cab spectacle windows is brilliant.

There are just 20 tickets left so if you fancy a day out with a difference please send your cheque and SAE to Bryan Clarke 10a Love Lane Bridgnorth Shropshire WV16 4HD.

Superb. Well done guys. Quick question, have you had the other wheels made yet? I can remember where you are up to. Cheers Gav
