Ethically tricky, wow that's a good expression but irrelevant, I can't see where ethics come into it, once again it's the owners property and his to do with as he/she pleases. Remember it's been said before, it's only a coat of paint.
Going back to the house point, yes you may get into trouble trying to built a large extension, but no one can prevent you from painting it whatever colour you wish. Case not long ago where someone painted there there property in large stripes, no one could do little about it.

I think you will find they were ordered to repainting that house

But weren't the initial comments more like - why paint something wrong (ie inauthentic) if it's as easy to paint it right? eg 5699.

As far as I can see whether the owner is a single person or it's a group, the same applies, educational charities or not..

According to the book "Stanier Pacifics at Work" 6253 to 6257 were fitted with a self cleaning smoke box when built but the work was never carried out on 6220 to 6252.

A valid point but if an alternate paint scheme is the price of getting something restored then IMO it's a price that's often worth paying.
Many of those who make the most noise about livery are often those who haven't contributed anything towards the restoration. Of course they are entitled to an opinion but the choice in the end should be that of the owner and/or those who have sweated blood to get the job done.
If it wasn't for Red Bull we would have waited much, much longer for an airworthy Sea Vixen. Many warbirds now are carrying sponsors logos. Whilst such things may seem incongruous to some, if it keeps these wonderful aircraft flying then I can't say it bothers me.
It does make me chuckle when somebody argues that a red 8F is wrong as it may lead future historians to believe that 8Fs ran in that colour yet are happy to see a long lost loco recreated by the renumbering of a survivor which apparently won't lead future historians to believe that this long lost loco survived the cutter's torch.

How can a coat of paint make the difference between a loco being restored or not? It's the last thing to be done after the really expensive bit and I'm sure the Cost of lined red livery for the 8F was more than a coving of unlined black.

Some of us are willing to stomach a ficticious livery if it's the price we pay for seeing a loco restored which might otherwise have gone unrestored had the owner who decided on said livery spent his money differently. Case in point, Galatea

A Jubilee in full cry on the S&C is a sight to behold and seeing a correctly turned out one today would take me back to the days of Alberta on the 10.17 Leeds Carlisle. As for Galatea never seen it and no desire to do so, I'll wait for the real deal ( Bahamas)

sorry john cant agree that Bahamas is the real deal.great as she is double chimneys don't look as good as single chimneys on jubilees.prior to 1961 she looked the real deal.

I've said it before, I think Galatea looks lovely in Red. Maybe they could do with tarting up the paint job a bit but I think it suits the class very well, accurate or not!

back to 6233 - I've not seen her in the flesh (or any duchess) but hoping too next year, so pre-grouping livery will be a nice treat!

Any green jubilee has got to be better than 45699, totally wrong, even the shade of red is not LMS.

Is there not an argument to say that if a locomotive is in service on either the main line or on preserved lines that charge for tickets then it remains "in revenue-earning service" as it is earning revenues for the tour operators / preserved railway it runs on?

When you have a locomotive such as a 9F which has now spent longer in preservation than it ever did as a working machine under BR, is there not an argument to say that that locomotive has more of a history in preservation than it ever did pre-preservation?

So if they paint HMS Victory in day glow yellow that's alright because it's spent longer in preservation than it did as a ship of the line. Sorry can't see the logic, you used the word preserved, for me that's recreating history in a working museum, not achieved using your argument.

I must also disagree that a locos history is ongoing, as a working piece of machinery history finishes when it's withdrawn from revenue earning service and it becomes scrap metal, from then of it is an historical artefact to be preserved and conserved as part of the railway story.[/QUOTE]

Good job steam did not go on long after 68 or they could have all been in corporate blue livery .

Arguably it was only really the end of steam that made BR blue possible. Steam would have stayed in filth with black or occasionally green primer.

I would agree with you if it were in LMS red, dropped the 4 and had L M S on the tender.
