In view of the dearth of proper steam south of the Thames, I will be with VT on Saturday to York. A Castle and a Duchess on LNER territory is something not to miss.

...and as far as I can make out I think the Duchess may be involved in shunting the Vintage stock off 5043's train. But the loco movements around York are quite complex and I may have got it wrong !

David I think you will find that 5043 will shunt its own stock back to Holgate, then go off to turn first before going to the NRM for servicing. 46233 on the other hand will go direct to the NRM for servicing and then turn before joining its train in Holgate. A diesel (possibly the NRM one)will take the stock to Holgate. Dont expect the Duchess to hang around long on arrival as the time available for all this is not very generous to say the least. The Castle on the other hand leaves much later so has more time to play with. But as with all plans it may welll change on the day.

The control that covers York station seem to have trouble with anything out of the ordinary, clearing empty stock from the station to Holgate can sometimes take ages, then returning it to the platform a couple of minutes before departure time, and then trying to put the blame delay onto the charter when it is obvious you cannot get 300+ passengers on in a couple of minutes.o_O

Ralph - if you are thinking of last Saturday, the reason we sat in Platform 10 for so long was because of a points failure in Holgate Reception sidings. In the end it was decided to park the train in Holgate Loop. The signallers can only react to the situations they are presented with and believe me these situations can change with great rapidity.

I was not thinking of last Saturday, but several previous trips to York when the charters I have been working on have been held at Holgate until an on time departure was impossible. Last Saturday the delay going to Holgate was not a problem, but putting us in 7 on the way back, not altering the indicator boards, so that our passengers were still waiting on 10, then many normals getting abusive with us as they wanted then TP to Man Picc and it was our fault the indicator boards were wrong.

I have often experienced unnecessary delays on service trains and on charters at York; the York signallers are often referred to in less than complimentary terms by railway staff and the public alike.
I believe Hull is also controlled by York and on a number of occasions the train I was travelling on from Doncaster was held outside Paragon to allow the coast line train to leave. Result very unhappy connecting passengers (including me) waiting an hour for the next train up the coast line.
It seems to me the ability to look forward is governed by rules or the computer and thus common sense is not allowed to play its part. However very occasionally common sense does prevail and it very often results in scintillating main line steam performances.

Lovely run up to York. Nicely timed all the way. Stood on the end of P10/11 at York to watch The Earl shunt it's stock before The Duchess pulled in a few minutes later. A GWR and a LMS loco on the LNER in 2015. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself in case you are dreaming.
