    Hi

I wonder if somebody could help me? I'm thinking of going to get some shots of the duchess near Stoke bank, where is the best location for this?? The steepest gradient possible to see

There is/was a shot near Swayfield but even thought there is a footpath through the field in question, the last time I was there, the farmer took great umbrage to my presence so I wouldn't recommend it.

There are a couple of shots near Corby Glen, one at the old Station, take the A151 from the Village go under the railway and turn left almost back on yourself up to the lineside. You may need a step ladder because I bet there is now high Pallisade fencing at this point. The other may be the same as Spamcan's location, come out of Corby Glen on A151 turn first left and look out for a farm track up to a farm on your right walk up to the farm almost to the railway and turn left along the footpath which leads to a footbridge over the line. It's probably best to ask at the farm if there's anyone there, I didn't have a problem.

I wouldn't go anywhere South of Corby Glen as the line curves and the sun will be almost head on at that time of day. There must be some locations North of here but i don't know them.

Good luck, I'm staying in the fens both sides of March as I don't like the wires.

Erm, the tour on the 12th runs out of Kings Cross so you'll need a damn good lens if you're going to phot it from March. :)

That'll teach me to read things properly, I assumed we were talking about tomorrow's trip from Norwich so my advice about the sun may be wrong.

My Sigma 150/500 lens is good but not that good!

Looking at the forecast, I don't think that the sun is going to be troubling anyone on Stoke Bank.

I don't know why, but I can't pick this up at all on Real Time Trains.

Ah there it is. Thank you. Can't pick it up on Realtimetrains at any location, it's like it doesn't exist. Never seen that before.

I've found if you try a different location it usually works, just tried with York and got both steam including moves to Holgate and an ex Bridlington.

Today's Duchess trivia question. On the side of the cab of 6233 today at York was the classification 8P. About 300 metres away in the museum, her sister 6229 carried 7P. Why?

The Duchesses power classification was 7p until the mid 1950s.

The LMS didn't have an 8P classification, that was a BR invention.

All correct of course. BR standardised everything but it may be one of those "not a lot of people know that" things unless you are the all knowing NP!

There was a general reassessment under BR, the Scots and Rebuilt Patriots went from 6P to 7P and the old LMS classification of 5XP (bit more than a 5 but not quite a 6) went when the Jubilees became 6P.
