    I'm attending this event for the first time in April and I was wondering whether you could help me with a few things.
    1. Does most of the action happen in Dresden station or the roundhouse?
    2. Do many of the staff speak English?
    3. How easy is it to get from the station to the roundhouse?
    This would also be a good place to post any news about the event like locos that are attending and that sort of thing.

    Hi there,

    Action is shared between the Hauptbahnof and the Roundhouse/Museum.

    The Hauptbahnof is where all the steam specials arrive/depart, some arranged by the Steam Festival organisers of which 6 are planned this year and others bringing in the locos and special trains from all over Germany.

    At the museum there are various displays and also locos in steam being interchanged on the turntable at the roundhouse. Last year also a steam loco was giving cab rides for a small additional charge.

    As ever with German festivals there are also food stalls selling various bratwurst and beer etc.

    There will be a regular bus running between the Hauptbahnof and the Museum site although it is walkable in about 25 minutes.

    Full details can be found on the OFFICIAL website http://www.igbwdresdenaltstadt.de/index.php/en/9-englisch/189-8-dresdner-dampfloktreffen-2 where there are also details of how to book for the special trains which is updated regularly, but if you can read German there is often more details on the German pages.

    One feature of at least one of the special trains is a parallel run with two trains running alongside in the same direction for part of the journey before they combine and form a double headed train for the rest of the journey.

    For the Steam Transport enthusiast Dresden has more to offer, steam powered paddle steamers on the River Elbe, and it is possible to reach at least 4 narrow gauge railways from there, Zittau, Radebeul, Cranzahl and Freital Hainsburg.

    Dresden also has a very extensive tram system.

    Hope this is useful, have a good visit.

    Note that the Rotterdam based SSN are running a (mostly) steam special from Rotterdam all the way to Dresden from 14 - 17th April 2016. Traction is probably Pacific 01.1075.

    Here is a link to their Dutch language page for the trip:.
    http://www.stoomstichting.nl/Display.php?Subject=EvenementenEnRitten&Language=NL
    Best way of reserving would be to use their contact page and ask a question. Most of the volunteers can manage English.

    What's involved:
    Day 1. Rotterdam-Dresden (800 km), despite the long distance mostly by steam
    Day 2. Steamtrip Dresden-Zittau via unelectrified lines, visit to one of the many steam lines, guided tour round Dresden;
    Day3. Participation in one of the many steam excursions, entry to the Dampflok Museum Bw Dresden-Altstadt, trip on the steam paddle steamer on the Elbe, lightshow in in the depot, etc.;
    Day 4. Return journey.

    3 nights hotel, breakfast, dinner, picnic lunch.
    Cost: EUR 795 single room, EUR 695 twin room sharing. Prices are provisional at the moment.

    I'm not their representative, but I can help with language problems (if any).

    Thanks far all the info. I've booked myself onto the Thursday and Friday trips. I'm hoping to go on the Zittau line and visit the Saxony steam loco museum in Chemnitz. I hope one of these runs is a parallel one and I'm hoping for some interesting traction on Friday's train. I know Thursday's train is E77 10 and a class 50 double-headed. I'm hoping I can visit dresden transport museum on the Thursday but I can't make too many plans before the times are released. My main worry is finding my way from my hotel to where I want to be!

    The Hotel Adler on Kotzschenbroderstrasse. I hope there are trams nearby. I'm going to have to learn some German so I don't get on the wrong one!

    I've never seen that message but it wasn't easy to pay for. I had to send it from my bank, which costed £15! Grrrrr!

    Bus route 64 passes your hotel. Take this to Kaditz where tram route 9 starts. Take a no.9 tram to the Hauptbahnhof, then a no.8 tram to its terminus at Südvorstadt. Then a 61 bus to the Zwickauer Strasse stop. From there it's a very short walk to the depot. Other route permutations are available

    Worth buying a Tageskarte/Day ticket. Good value for money. https://www.dvb.de/en-gb/tickets-en/ticket-finder/
    This site has a journey planner and once you've sussed how to work it, it can be quite useful.
    When spelling the name of the street your hotel is in it's important to note the umlaut above the first o as in Kötzschenbroderstrasse. Quite an important distinction. If you can't do an umlaut on your keyboard than replace it with an e as in Koetzschenbroderstrasse. That will serve the same purpose and the journey planner will recognise it.

    I think I'll get the tram to the hbf and get the vintage bus service to the museum. The journey takes 2 minutes. The no. 9 tram stops at the Postplatz, which is right by the transport museum. That'll be Thursday sorted. I can decide whether to do that before or after my train when the times come out. I'll try and go before and after but I might have to pay twice. I won't be doing that! I might try and get the 15" gauge Grossepark railway in, which is right by the hbf!

    The Dresden area is full of transport interest; the steam festival is the icing on the cake!

    I emailed them and they responded today with bank transfer details. HSBC charged me £4, which i thought was reasonable.

    No idea if you're a beer drinker but the centre of Altstadt area offers a few of interest although the bars are rather touristy.
    On the other side of the river in the Neustadt area I would recommend the Bautzner Tor, Hoyerswardaer Strasse 37. This is an outlet for the Neustädter Hausbrauerei microbrewery and very nice too are the beers. I can recommend also the Planwirtschaft, Louisenstrasse 20. Up a short alleyway between buildings so not immediately visible but well worth finding. Spread over three floors, the basement specialises in beers from Saxony. Both had English speaking staff when I was there a couple of years ago. Close to Altstadt depot is Feldschlößchen Stammhaus, Budapester Strasse 32, the Feldschlößcen brewery tap.

    Ha ha. Yes. A visit to Deutschland wouldn't be complete without sampling some of the local nectar. The best thing I remember from my previous visit was that people seem better at enjoying beer without getting completely wasted. It's a much more social activity, which is the way that it should be.

    Should have been in Dresden on Ascension Day 1990. The whole city seemed to be plastered and needless to say, we joined in the fun. At 6 large beers for just under a £1 it didn't break the bank either. :)

    Be aware of a change to one of the steam hauled excursions on the 15th. Email this morning;

    You have to 15:04. the steam special trip booked to Zittau. Unfortunately, the railway association "IG Bw Old Town" for these steam special train had to change the destination, as for the intended route take place due to this construction and the railway station in Eibau is fully locked.

    The special train now moves from Dresden to Löbau. Experience a scenically very responsive ride along the Lusatian mountain country on the historic "Via Regia".

    Staying in Löbau is about two hours, the terrain Ostsächsische Eisenbahnfreunde with nacelle and Railway Museum can be visited in this period.Admission to the museum site costs per person 2, - Euro and is to be paid locally (not included in ticket). The train will be covered from Dresden with two steam locomotives, which will be, will be announced soon.

    Shame to miss out on the narrow gauge @ Zittau, but the double header will make up for it :)
