An amazing result, it's like the Tornado phenomenon all over again! I may be biased, but it's rather noticeable that it is the LNER engines that have this effect.......!

Apart from "celebrity" status, it is surely rarity value, which is the legacy of Barry scrapyard.

The exception to rarity as far as LNER engines are concerned is of course A4's.

So much for the Beano saying the tickets were over priced.

The NYMR have a lot riding on this event. Let's hope it all goes to plan. The balancing DMU service has now been upgraded to a steam service to cater for anticipated demand.

And I believe that any 8 coach trains will receive steam banking assistance!

I believe it is a condition placed on the NYMR by the owners and operators.

Probably because nobody with a care wants to see it flogged?

8 used to be the standard train length. I saw 44767 take 9 without a hitch. It's a bit of a shame because the NYMR used to be a guaranteed thrash destination!

A post which encapsulates the probable reasoning for the edict of an assisting loco.
Any loco routinely worked at its limit accelerates wear and tear, increasing maintenance costs exponentially. What state is 44767 in at the moment?

Evidently there was high enough demand for it, not that I would have (nor have) gone for it.
Nice to see that the DMU has been upgraded in expectation (how many cars is the NYMR's DMU btw?). I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

As long as it's steam on the back and not a box. I can just imagine the outcry if they shove their class 25 on back !

Are you sure about 44767? I thought the only loco to drag nine around was 3672 and that had to be specially arranged as nine coaches is too long for the loops. An up train can't leave Grosmont until the down train has actually arrived at Goathland..
Eight coaches can be managed if the conditions are right but it puts a Black 5 right on the limit. They aren't as suitable as the Std 4's because they have virtually the same tractive effort but weigh more. Seven has been the norm for service trains for a number of years, now.

I remember a trip back in 2005 I think where the 56XX took a rake at least 5 Gresleys up the bank to Goathland. Never heard anything like it before or since. Don't think we ever got over 15 mph but the noise was glorious.

Five was no problem for it and 15 mph is about what you need to do to keep time ( 15.5 mph to be precise.) With seven on it was an even slower plod but it got always there. Never did understand how these locos deserved a Cl.5 rating.

It was on a Moorlander in about 1999. It was the 7 Moorlander coaches with a blue and grey on the back and the inspection saloon on the front.
