The answer is yes no other livery it could have. In all the stuff I've had from the trust nothing else has been mentioned and I think they would have a mutiny on there hands of it was

I believe it was one of the reasons for choosing the P2 for their next project.

Dare I nail my colours to the mast and suggest a stint in BR Blue? I know it wouldn't be accurate but...It might look good...?

Was about to say surely they would have been around for wartime black, but of course they'd all been given the 'new shape' by then? And I'm not a big fan of non authentic livery but I can picture a p2 in br or garter blue...

A lick of paint as to what might have been would be nice :)

Would also keep the loco "fresh" in the eye's of Joe Public - worked with Tornado. ;) and @class8mikado I like your thinking - it would look the mutts in wartime black!! :):):)

I think the biggest difficulty with turning out a P2 in BR livery would be trying to decide what number it should carry! If the P2s hadn't been rebuilt as A2s, they surely wouldn't have been renumbered in the 6050X sequence with the other A2s. In the event, Thompson didn't have to accommodate any 2-8-2s in the 1946 scheme so it's impossible to know where he would have fitted them in.

I'll say this though: if the P2 were to have a spell in BR livery then I think, for sake of balance, Tornado should have a spell in LNER livery as No. 163! ;)

As Bulleid reportedly had a great deal of input concerning the design of the P2s, surely numbering her in the 11D series would be appropriate? ;)

The P2s would have been allocated 990-996, and actually one of them carried their 3 digit number (995, Thane of Fife) for a very short period. The Thompson numbering scheme had the 2-8-2s in the 990+ area as there were at the time only eight mikados (including the P1s but they did not last enough to be renumbered into a new scheme).

Therefore it is logical to assume that any new P2 would take the next LNER - and then BR - number in the sequence, as 997 and then as 60997.

By the way, Tornado has been LNER no.163 before:

All photographs are copyright of the A1 Steam Trust - posted just to show what a handsome "what if" an LNER liveried Peppercorn A1 is!

Reality always better than fiction one suspects!

As the new build P2 is to have various inauthentic features perhaps it would be safer not to paint it at all...

It was chosen because it is a magnificent loco, as Mark Allatt has said, Tornado was only the trial run and whatever discussion takes place on here it will only be LNER Apple Green, why would anyone want anything else?

Let's be fair to Tornado and to reduce her to just being a "trial run" - enough people wanted an A1 and as we're discovering, there's a lot of different people supporting one or the other, but less than a third support both locomotives. Hopefully in time that gap will close but it's encouraging that so many people are enthused by the success of Tornado that they want to support the next one.
