Have you ever noticed how no one ever talks about a charter until after the event, when the images appear?......... and I'm not just talking MHR, but all charters on all lines! ;)

Surely there's got to be some balance between secrecy to avoid freeloaders and publicity to get customers though? I can quite understand not publishing a date, but not publishing at all? What if I wanted to go on it - how am I supposed to find out? @Sidmouth often publishes his photo charters so we know that they are at least happening. I've always known when there's going to be a photo charter on the GWSR without having to look on HOPS etc. for example.

You won't be able to see it at the gala. as its out of the way, but will be seen in the next wagon group blog as well as the the next MHN, so as images will soon be available to the wider public - here it is.... a project no doubt for the younger members of the group.

Steam Railway lists details of photo charters occuring each month with brief details ( No date given) and contact details of the organiser. Matt has given brief details on here in the past when he short of numbers and asked people to PM him. My first full day charter was one of Matt's when he was short of numbers.

Seems very closed book to me "I know a bloke who know a bloke" kind of thing. Doing a quick google I can very easily book a Don Bishop photo charter online, and with the date published before booking.

I'm not interested in being on any mailing list thanks, I was just curious about the whole thing really.

I have noticed in the last few Steam Railway Magazines Matt's photo charters are now listed with all the other photo charters.

The only photo charter company I know is Timeline Events who advertise all the details way in advance. So assumed that was standard industry practice because let's face it if you wanted to freeload you just add yourself to the mailing lists and get the rough details that way.

oh Damn, there was i hoping you had gotten yourselves a little shunting loco so that you dont need to ring Ropley every time you want to move something , something like a nice little bagnal 0-4-0 would do the trick

I don't see the point going on a photo charter. You go to the same locations every time and take the same old shots. Plus you must be disadvantage with your shot with a large group of poeple in the same location try to take the same photo.

The timeline ones with reenactors look rather good, have seen some they have done at Didcot and the photos coming out of it are amazing.

On the Bluebell you do not go to exactly the same locations each time. eg, Jon Bowers ran 2 consecutive days of charters on the Bluebell last year with the S15 on the Southern set, and used diferent locations ( apart from one at a diferent time of day and side of line ) each day, and we did not use some locations used at past charters. Numbers are limited - depends on the railway, some have more room lineside than others.

    @Duty Druid @flying scotsman123

    Many thanks for mentioning me

At the risk of course of thread drift (mods report needed) When charters started it was who you know and you were added to lists by introduction or recommendation . That was how I started

The world has changed now , there are a number of organisers each doing differing volumes and specialisms and the number of events needs a little more advertising . That is why I have the 30742 Charters facebook page www.facebook.com/30742charters and I'll post here and on other forums . More basic details appear in Steam Railway as you have noted

If any event is of interest a place can be an email or facebook message away

    You're most welcome! :)

T'was good to meet you at @Spamcan81's charter with the D49 on the NVR. ;)

But the crux of the matter IS that the organisers of charters don't need freeloaders 'crashing' the event from what ever distance in a publicly accessible place - rather negates the point for those paying for the privilege - hence the unwritten rule of silence.

BUT we seriously digress from the exploits of the MHR wagon group!

That's the wrong kind of tractor to replace the ones that are leaving the railway!

That's a great addition to the lines fleet.
No doubt it will appear in a lot of pictures when it is restored.

Ivatt tank 41312 has now been lined out and has the later style of BR emblem on its side tanks. Can't wait to see it at the Spring gala. It looks great.
