Wasn't there an issue with parts for the braking system that delayed 34046 getting its ticket after the work at Riley's?

There are quite a number of locomotives that have had teething troubles after heavy overhaul, it's the reason for the running in and load test. Unfair to associate Riley & Co with brake system failure, it could happen to anyone.

I wasn't, only responding to your post suggesting there was a parallel with Braunton! Which there is, but correlation is not necessarily indicative of causation.
The tender was done at NRM anyhow.

Better defend 26D_M here, the point of my post was to point out that sorting out air/ vacuum braking problems may take longer than expected, using Braunton as a case in point, as in protracted.

Fiasco? Thats a bit harsh. It was a well publicised heritage event, coverage in all the mainstream local and national press was extensive and overwhelmingly positive.

I'm guessing that a thorough inspection of the tender might be important. Unless this is a minor snag/adjustment that needs to be made. Which is it?

Black five failed, timetable failed, no information!

It was well publicised alright and no doubt made plenty of money but still a fiasco.

    To put things in context.
ELR was in the unfortunate position of only being granted rights to stage the "rehearsals" when the lead actor was still learning his lines. Had there been a bigger window of opportunity, to launch the fully finished loco, doubtless a more polished show would have been possible. ELR didn't get that offer.
On the positive side many thousands of people rode behind the loco and the ELR was brought to the attention of countless new people.
Hopefully the show will return to Bury in the near future wearing the right costume and performing unaided.
It seems probable that some further testing will be needed too in the circumstances which only emphasises the as hoc nature of what ELR has been offered. Personal opinion is that this is a shame given the role ELR is publicly acknowledged to have played in completion of the project.

Don't forget that many people just wanted to see Flying Scotsman up close, in steam and moving. That's what they got. Ok - the enthusiasts/photographers wanted the perfect package. They will get that in due course. I suspect that the ELR management was pleased with the publicity and the income despite the hiccups.

Standard gala fare then. Probably only an inconvenience for the lineside brigade. The publicity in the national press for FS and ELR has been priceless and I suspect the majority of the "mere mortals" who went to ride behind or just see 60103 came away satisfied.

Whether it was a fiasco or not at the ELR, it certainly helped raise the profile of the railway amongst the 'normals', the lineside was full of them on each of the days we visited. If the interest rubs off and remains/grows then more power to the ELR's elbow and the hobby/interest in general. We had several conversations filling in details with families out for the day with kids (wife's a teacher, can't help herself!). Also the number who had come out for a walk to see the engine and stayed around the railway, I know the garden centre at Summerseat benefited from extra patronage in their cafe.
No grunts from us, a good excuse to get out away from the tele, good walk, good company, big steam engines on a cold day - most excellent!
