Roger the permanent Stationmaster. Sounds like a character from a certain really useful engine book. Roger being a noun of course, not a verb in this case.

My parents used to live near Station Road, Broadway, the goods shed was easily visible from their house. They moved up into LNER country in 2004, shame in a way really.

Bugger if I know! :) I'm pretty certain that some council or another was looking at the possibility though.

One of my favourite moans! When an area has a County Council, District Council and Parish Council failure to specify which is most unhelpful. :Banghead:

One of our volunteers travels to Evesham by train to work with us and then takes a bus from Evesham to Broadway, which passes along Station Road. It has been know for the kindly bus driver to allow him to alight at the entrance to the station. Perhaps a stop could be added on this route.

Distance to the station will depend on the starting point but from the village green it is around half a mile gently downhill or just over a mile from the top end of the High Street. Nicely walkable but a vintage bus shuttle would add to the experience of catching a train.

Signal box steps assembly day today!

The ex CRC2 Monday gang is starting to flex its muscles, as no fewer than 8 turned up today, more than we had at CRC2! The day was dedicated to the SB steps, which had been part manufactured off site and were delivered on Saturday. More parts arrived today, and the gang attached the steps to the landing by the signal box door.
At the same time, two dumpy bags of ballast were turned into concrete and shovelled bit by bit into a second row of shuttering constructed below the bottom of the steps. This second layer of concrete will support the bottom of the steps in what is made up ground, and will provide a path for the signalman to the back edge of the platform.
The steps are needed urgently, as a contractor will fit the electrics in the box starting next week, and up to now there was no way in!
Still to go are the newel posts and the handrails. Two newel posts were trial fitted.

From the photographs you can see the new footbridge tower that was delivered on Wednesday last week, and the hole for the concrete pour on platform two that will support the other new tower. This concrete is due Wednesday first thing.
Shotblasting and repair of the centre span is imminent. We need to get the towers and span up by the end of March. The steps are for another budget period!

The last picture shows the steps and box, with fresh concrete, at the end of the day. In the foreground is the new lamp post socket (one additional one for each side of the box) and the ducting leading to the next two. These ducts now need to be covered in sand, and then the rest of the platform infill can be brought in.

BTW we need 9 original type SB step tread castings, so if anyone can help with this (even 4 would do) then we would be very interested to hear.

Lots of work going on at Broadway today by the looks of it from the Broadway Blog Webcam.
    http://broadwaystation.co.uk/camera/image11_1.jpg

It appears that a dark and light stone coloured structure has appeared to partly block the webcam view - I guess that'll be Platform 1 Footbridge Tower then!

    Marvellous!

You are correct, both towers were lifted into place by lunchtime today, they look impressive. The span should be shot blast next Wednesday, so hopefully wont be too long before this is erected (after painting, etc). The towers are yet to be bolted down in their final position as flexibility is required when the span is being added.

Some pictures of the towers being erected are attached. The second tower was delivered today, and then both towers were immediately put up. They sit on 16 flexible bolts each, which allow the towers to be tilted outwards slightly when the centre span is lifted in between them. Afterwards they will be fully tightened down. We hope to have this finished by the end of March.
The other big job going on today was the placing of the dampproof membrane and insulation sheets into the station building foundations. This will be covered in a 100mm layer of concrete, to form the floor of the new building. Then brick laying can start ! We meant to do this earlier, but the awful weather and high wind made it impossible both Saturday and Monday.

As stated earlier, the fabrication of new steps is one of the things that are being deferred until we can see how much support the March EIS share issue has. The important thing at this time is to get the centre span up, as once the rails are in between the platforms, the crane can no longer stand there.

A video of the Malvern side tower being placed can be seen here:

Breva: Thankyou for yet more interesting progress reports. How I wish your standard of reporting was replicated on other heritage railways!

    Signal box electrics installation progressing?

Just out of interest, the large insulating sheets, presumably some sort of polystyrene, must be quite rigid in compression to enable the concrete floor screed to be laid on top?

( sorry, turning a statement into a question....)

Thank you for your kind comments. See also the B&S blog with an update on Hayles today.

The Signal Box electrical installation has been going since Monday. The sparkies will be there for three weeks in all. Can't wait to brew the first cup of tea up there! Another team was completing the steps up to the operating room door. The carpenters had a photograph of Shirley box to consult....

I don't know what the insulation is made of, but it is indeed large and rigid. Also, when bundled into 4 sheets (as it comes) it is surprisingly heavy, and awkward to carry in the wind. We'll be glad to be rid of it, it was first stored in the locking room but had to come out for work to start there on the electrics, so was stored outside the last few days.

The Monday gang had a fruitful day putting up three GWR lamp posts. It was freezing - minus one - and bitterly cold in the wind out by the bracket signal. It was too cold to do what was originally intended, which was to pour the concrete to finish off the station building floor. Wednesday week now looks like a likely day, keeping half an eye on the weather forecast. Before that, it was too wet ! It's never right...

Prior to commissioning the replica cast iron GWR posts, we bought two at auction, until we were outbid at a third attempt. Together with a gifted post and one found on Ebay, we had four originals on site. One has gone to the foundry to make up the new pattern, and today we planted the other three. They came from Old Hill (near Birmingham), Carmarthen and Littleton & Badsey, a closed station on the OWW just around the corner! How very fitting.

The pictures show a post being brought from the store, the one nearest the signal box being planted, the three posts now in situ (all south of the box, replacing incorrect former street lights from Kingston on Thames), a peep into the locking room where the electricians are working, and the reason people come to Broadway - a view today along the upper high street. Beautiful Cotswolds !

We have 2 lamp tops in store, which should go on next.

Having spent a lot of money on commissioning a pattern for replica GWR lamp posts, it occurs to us that other people might want to buy one or more, be it for a GWR railway, or just for their own garden.
If you are interested, send me a pm. We expect to place our order in a couple of weeks. By buying one, you will be helping the Broadway project. The tops are commercially available from a number of places. Us GWR people ought to be sharing such resources.

Just a short note to show progress today with the GWR lamp posts by the signal box.

We have now taken out 4 'Kingston-on-Thames municipal street posts' (5 others remain), rebuilt the boxes in the ground to hold the GWR types we will plant, planted 3 original GWR posts, and today we put the top on one of them, so that you can see what they look like. We have another top in store, but couldn't put it up as it is needed to take to the shop selling the light fittings to determine the correct thread. So it should be up shortly. The posts will be wired into the box, which is now live, with the electricians gone again.

The concrete for the station building floor is due on Wednesday, weather permitting.

The SB name board is being drilled, and should be placed shortly.

A first shot blasting of the footbridge centre span has taken place. Steelwork repairs will commence next week. When complete, that and the rest of the span will be shotblasted again to ready it for painting.

Thoughts are turning to the letters we need for the V boards. If anyone has any 4ins GWR letters lying about, we'd be interested in some, or swaps with those that we have.

If you know the typeface, could not Carriage and Wagon plasma cut them for you from the correct thickness metal? They are certainly capable of bespoke patches for their carriages/
