Back to livery, and sat near a group of non enthusiast rugby fans with FS the subject of conversation. They just assumed it would be in apple green - and no mention of chimneys or deflectors.

With £4.2 million already spent there's no chance it's going to be changed now. With the benefit of hindsight it would probably been more cost effective to stuff and mount it and build a new A3, Tornado only cost £3m

Don't forget the cost of buying it in the first place 2.2 million.

Only to a few Ralph, only to a few. The general public still seem to be in love with her and that's what matters.

Mr Druids post #4878.............spot on. All this paint and external fittings froth is cobblers (IMO). We should be revelling in the massive superb engineering job that has taken place UNDER THE SKIN, 10 years ago it was a "bag of rusty spanners", NEARLY ready for the gas axe, now, it's getting ready for KX and a gallop up the ECML.
For those folk who want to go back in time to days gone by........Dr Who is your man. And the only time FS will EVER be put back into original as built condition will be when the NRM stuff and mount it.

Really, how crass. Very few locomotives have carried the torch for steam preservation in this country directly in the public eye and Tornado has done that with aplomb since 2008.

You should be getting on your hands and knees thanking the A1 Trust for filling the void left by preservationists in this country for so many years, especially in terms of original thought and a different way of approaching the whole problem of building/rebuilding and running a steam locomotive.

Her Top Gear appearance aside, Tornado's been one of the very few mainline performers in railway preservation that has captured the public's imagination. Two documentaries on the BBC? The thousands which lined the routes she ran on completion? A royal naming and several royal trains? Now running the prestigious Belmond British Pullman.

Yawnado indeed! Railway enthusiasts don't know they're born sometimes.

I've never heard this and am also somewhat surprised. I've only had one main line run behind Tornado (Devon Belle, UK Railtours, August 2014) and I have to say it ranks among the best main line steam trips I have ever been on. Sunday's trip to Worcester with UKRT is virtually fully booked. I think it's a great engine and would be very happy to travel behind it again.

The Flying Scotsman "brand" does still appear to be very much LNER Apple Green. I took my two year old to the NRM on Saturday. He had a great time and on the way out we went to the shop get him a model for his wooden layout and he chose Flying Scotsman as 4472 in Apple Green. The NRM didn't appear to be selling a BR Green version suitable for him! So, that's another two year old growing up thinking FS is an Apple Green loco. It will take a very long time for the public to think of Flying Scotsman as being a BR Green loco with deflectors. How much disappointment and potential lost revenue is caused by its present guise remains to be seen. I suspect the majority of Joe Public will enjoy their day out, ask some questions and perhaps learn something about locomotive evolution, but I can't help feeling that the NRM won't maximise their return with it in its current form.

Once again I have to point out that the NRM are in fact carrying out an obligation to paint the locomotive BR green as previously agreed with Steam Railway Magazine. It won't stay BR green though I feel it will be this way for a couple of years at the very least.

The intention had always been to return to apple green I believe - and it's perhaps telling that almost all of the merchandise including model trains and similar are in apple green.

Down here we have recently been bearing the brunt of storm Imogen - I walked the dog on the beach at the weekend and I swear that the storm was blowing so hard it stirred up all the froth from this forum and landed it on the beach! It was like whipped cream!!

Seriously - I just don't get this debate at all?!?!? The whole conversation is going in circles and has been done to death!

It would be nice to just celebrate what we have - the past is gone, time for FS to write a new chapter!

More importantly I love reading about heritage paintings efforts online - I find it fascinating how they work!

I'm off for a coffee (no froth please...'

A coat of paint won't alter the revenue one bit, museums have a duty to educate and inform, no doubt the NRM will get across the fact that it now represents the last configuration it's long service life. I hate the term "rebranding" but thats what the marketing people call it and it's been done countless times before successfully. My favourite chocolate bar, Marathon is now called Snickers but I still buy them.

There have also been disasters where the public says *** you and doesn't turn out. Rumour has it new formula cadbury's cream eggs are one such.

Wait until Pendennis Castle is running for that one...

Its funny how these fads change. As I recall in the 60s it was "originality", and it was considered undesirable to preserve a locomotive that no longer exhibited the worst of the original design team's errors. Indeed I think sometimes there were even things done approximating to back converting the A3 to A1.
Now we have "authenticity" which seems to be mainly a nostalgia for the god-awful last days of steam. Who knows what it will be next...
