Not altogether, in my youth BR steam locos were run down, had peeling paint and layers of filth on them.
Atmospheric it may be but hardly the locos at their best -- oh and the diesels failed frequently too !

One thing thats been forgotten in all this is that the loco has already appeared in BR green back in the early 90s. Here's a reasonable representation of Train 266 down the Kings Cross -Niddre, Scotch Goods on the Nene Valley Railway. Renumbered for the day as 60039 Sandwich for the morning and 60106 Flying Fox in the afternoon and yes I do know the tender is wrong. With a set of maroons on the main line she'll really look the business IMHO.

In my youth John - not yours ! -- I did see 46245 and clean it was too but around Warrington in the mid 60s grime was the order of the day.

I don't care how effective they are no one will ever convince me of the beauty of those blinkers!

They aren't beautiful - but they detract from the lines of the loco far less than full height deflectors such as worn by Humorist and the Peppercorn pacifics.

    IMHO of course....

It does look 'the business' with maroons btw.

It's an A3 so I like it with or without blinkers. IMO without = graceful, with = business like. Either will do for me but single chimney without blinkers will always be my preference.

I'm the other way round. Much prefer the "Peppercorn type". The Elephant ears carry forward from the smoke box too far and distract the eye more. They also look more like obvious bolt ons than the ones on Tornado and Blue Peter.

Just had a lady ask me why FS has changed her colour and number. Gave her the loco's history and the reasons for the various number changes. So that's another member of the public who was expecting 4472 and apple green.

I wouldn't mind seeing this controversy of apple green to reach the front page of many newspapers the way we are discussing here.

The Midland purists were dismayed when Johnson put Belpaire fireboxes on his 4-4-0s.:(
