Though the style of Green worn by Kingfisher when in green was not so handsome. Osprey in the pic looks much better.

Sounds quite a sensible idea to me.

I still dream of her regaining her temporary 2509 guise but this time as a runner.

It's not a bad idea. However I have a issue with renaming locos, at least in Apple Green she could stay as Bittern. Maybe one day they could build another 2509. Theres a boiler hanging around somewhere now that a certian A3 has stopped wearing it.

Now that's another can of worms opened as Bittern was never LNER green.

I know it would, though Shes the only one who would not look out of place in that colour and still retain her proper name. Though you could rename her Golden Eagle or Woodcock. If the latter you could also paint her Experimental Purple.

I have a question. Duchess of Hamilton is displayed at the NRM in LMS Crimson Lake, is this Authentic? From what I have seen She was built in 1938 and first painted in works grey with lining. She then went back into the works, painted Crimson Lake and swapped identitys with Coronation. So we have a Blue Duchess of Hamilton and a Crimson Lake Coronation. She goes to America and does not come back until 1942 during WW2. Her idenity is not swapped back until 1943 when she is painted wartime black. Then in 1947 the streamlined casing is removed. So it seems at no point did she ever appear in the livery she is currently painted. It's another can of worms I know but I don't see people frothing at the mouth about it. Unlike a certian A3 or even some A4's

I believe she did. My understanding, and I'm open to correction here, is that on her return from the USA she and the real 6220 took back their original identities, and 6229 returned to traffic for a short period in red and correctly numbered.

Whatever the truth there was a red loco numbered 6229 as seen at York even if it really was 6220. How much of the loco at The NRM is original anyway? The boiler and tender certainly aren't. Let's hope that a benefactor comes along to get her back in running order while I'm still around to see it.

Was the real 6220 ever in red livery as 6229? Hasn't the restored 6229 been described as being in April 1943 condition? (Though probably a lot cleaner and shinier now!)

(I have no idea, just curious)

I doubt that she did: her first repaint is reported as March 1944 into plain black during a Heavy Service repair.

Incidentally, 6220 (6229) landed at Cardiff docks on 16th February 1942, but her first classified repair started after that was a Light Service started on 17th October and completed 11th November. She was not repainted black until November 1944, another Light Service, although she'd had a Heavy General repair 28th August 1943 to 25th September. The real 6220 was in Crewe Works for a Light Service 10th September 1942 to 3rd October, so the two engines were not in the Works together.

Information from Irwell Press's 'The Book of the CORONATION PACIFICS Mk2'.

Just to correct this erroneous post I made ages ago, 5601 was of course in the LMS post-war lined black livery on nationalisation. The list of locos which were in red into the BR years is given in Essery & Jenkinson "Illustrated History of LMS Locomotives"
