    Fair point, although the T3s were arguably not needed in large numbers as the T2s were perfectly competent machines, and as 2238 has demonstrated in preservation they were also surprisingly versatile.

    Now there's a thought for another thread: which goods engine classes have been the most successful as passenger engines in preservation?

    Erm, ok, now you guys have got off your chest whose heavy freight loco is more puissant...
    Isn't it great we have all these over 100 year old locos in action. I think at least one is over 150 (FR20)!
    Not to mention those old NG beauties in Gwynedd who I excluded in my original question...

    Outright: Nothing touches a 9F if we're honest, power and speed.

    Pres: more difficult, A 4F or 3205 would suffice for many, but be underpowered for a Moors or Churnet Valley.

    Ah yes, but the 9Fs saw passenger service with BR, and although I initially thought of the Austerity tanks they also saw plenty of passenger use on military railways. I'm talking about classes which never pulled a passenger train until preservation.

    Think you'd be struggling to find a mainline type that hasn't been bolted to a set of coaches at least once, be it due to a failure, railtour or whatever, some of the types mentioned were pretty common on passenger workings, others less so but still far from unknown.

    We had a triple centenary about six years ago when 27, 178 and 323 all reached their hundredth birthday. I was firing 323 all yesterday on one of the service trains: amazing to think that despite being 106 years old this year, she has spent longer in preservation than in her first career!

    I think currently on the Bluebell 14 out of 32 engines (whether in traffic or not) are over 100 years old, a good number of those well past that figure. Fenchurch is not far short of 150, and it is hoped she will be running for that special birthday.

    The NER P3 (LNER J27) & T2 (LNER Q6) would probably fit this bill as they were simple 'rusty coupling' engines - 3 link an no vac brake - until the preservation era so banned from passenger trains. The best they could have done was give a struggling train a gentle shove.

    But it's good that you've added the vac brake. They are certainly enjoyable to travel behind - or at least the Q6 is (I can't speak for the J27). It took me on my first ever trip on the NYMR in 1981 and I was pretty impresed. I enjoyed watching a recent video someone posted on this forum showing that 63395 still puts on a good show over 30 years later.
