Early steam locos were referred to as she because they had a tender behind.

    OK, I'm going......

Better not go to Germany then. Die Lokomotive is a feminine noun so you'll have no choice. :)

True. But the train - Der Zug - is masculine, while Das Schiff and Das Boot (ship and boat) are neuter!

Genders in German take a lot of getting used to.

And the railway is die Bahn or die Eisenbahn, the track is die Strecke, railcar is die Fahrzeug but aircraft is strangely das Flugzeug. All very confusing and one of the difficulties of learning German.

As in French, Spanish and Greek. My knowledge then expires but is locomotive feminine in all European languages in which genders persist?

Nope. In Swedish, Lokomotiv (Normally shortened to "lok") is neuter.

Just gently steering the ship back on course, do we know if the offending white metal has been replaced and the wheelset back on the loco? Nothing yet on Ian's site.
Presumably there will need to be a running in turn before the next mainline outing.

    York-Scarborough, anyone...?

I think any test run will be in the dark so not to spoil the launch after painting.

When I saw it in the NRM yesterday afternoon the wheelset did not appear to be back in the works yet. One of the staff said he thought the journals were scored and needing attention.

I was told that sex is biological; gender is grammatical. It stopped me worrying that Das Madchen might be facing both ways. ;)

Or das Mädchen even. :) A peculiarity of German is that the diminutive form takes the neuter.
