Accomadation booked and will be down for the second Friady and Saturday. I have been to most Galas in the last 20 years but this time I'm mostly coming to see and ride behind the 9F. I hope this loco is being fully utilised for the weekend?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but sadly there is no 9F on the 11th (or 53809 apart from one of the last train in one of the directions)... but does one round trip and a half on the Saturday.

9Fs were often piloted by 75XXXs and 76XXXs in 1961 and 1962. They were piloted by 4Fs and 2Ps in 1960. They were occasionally piloted by 7Fs and were piloted by Bulleids at least twice.

If any kind soul could PM me the loco allocations for Saturday 12th March I would be most grateful and I won't tell a soul, promise;). I never let on to things that are suppose to be kept under your hat, so to speak. I personally find it always the ones that I've told.

What about doing what was done some years ago when a 'mega train' was run one evening with one of the GWR 2-8-0's and use a 7F/paired 7F's instead? 24 coaches BL - MD & return?

I would be interested to know of the second occasion when there was a 9F/Bulleid combination. Ivo Peters and Pete Smith both believe that the down working on 11th Aug '62 was the only occasion this happened, usually regarded as the most powerful combination to work over the line.

    No news yet AFAIK.
I think it's been deemed not viable to run evening mega-trains, as they only attract about 100 passengers on a 11 or 12 coach train.

I'm booked on one of Don Bishop's charters and will be around over the first weekend. Having been down in 1996 and 2006, I'm looking forward to this event. The locomotive combinations look great.

A question to those who saw the end of the S & D on 5/6 March 1966. Ivo Peters records that 80043 worked the 16.25 ex Bath Green Park on the Saturday. Does anyone know which engines worked the later trains that evening (18.10 ex Bath and 17.37 & 1846 ex Bournemouth)?

    Thanks

I'm sure people would like different combinations and all in steam all the time but the reality is you have to stop somewhere due to physical capacity of the line and the people so you are not going to please everybody all the time. The event is already running 3,200 miles of S&D Steam who much more can you handle !!!!!!!!!! The important thing is come along, spend some money so the WSR can clear its costs and enjoy something you cannot find anywhere else.

I was on the 18.10 ex Bath with 80138. 80037 worked the 17.37 to Templecombe, then followed the last service from Templecombe to Bath light engine. 80041 worked the 18.46 from Bournemouth through to Bath. At Templecombe 80043 piloted the train back into the station and was then attached to 80041 as pilot for the final service to Bath, which had been strengthened for three to six coaches. Finally 80138 worked the last 21.03 Templecombe - Bournemouth train, which was piloted out by 80037 before it departed LE for Bath.

    Many thanks.
I gather 80043 will be running at roughly the same time on the Saturday as 50 years ago. Unfortunately it won't be hauling 3 green coaches. But great that this long lost engine is back.

Do you know, I've been waiting for someone to point out my deliberate mistake. If you believe that statement you'll also believe that Network Rail are going to revert to only allowing steam on the mainline in the near future. Or did I dream that:).

I must have had that wrong. I have about 20 Ivo Peters books and the Peter Smith book nut I thought that I'd seen a picture of an unrebuilt and a rebuilt piloting a 9F.

Nothing been said, if it can't make it and no other guest loco comes I hope they can use 34053.

That's difficult as most of the time both 34053 (98) and the 44781 are rostered on to both run, its only a couple of days where they don't run on the same day. In fact all engines are running most of the time. Don't worry yet the powers that be will be working hard to sort it, if it can be sorted it will be.

As a bit of a game which will only cost you £3.50 (for the brochure with all the running times/engines for the whole gala in) perhaps somebody could work out how many turns can't be covered by one of the other engines if 44871 can't make it ? Just as a bit of a wheeze, first one with the right answer gets a 'well done'. I have the roster in front of me so I will count myself out !!

The problem is just like the Bath Green Park Shed Masters problem every summer Saturday ???
