Spoke to one of my colleagues who saw what I presume was the 'Scotsman' out near Scarborough yesterday. I asked him how it/she looked and I quote 'green, shiny and smokey' so I took that as an accurate representation of how she should look.

My first recorded sighting of her was as 4472 in the summer of '64. She was running light to London so I just had to do a reprise when she came south this afternoon. The colour looks pretty damn good to me. The "vivid green" ones must have been taken on something with the colour balance all wrong.

Looked pretty damn good to me when she passed Hornsey earlier. Rubbish day at work and an immaculate A3 passes through just as I got to the station to go home, excellent!

If anyone doubted how good she would look in BR livery, then your excellent pic should help dispel the discord! Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks John. It was a magic moment. Like being an 11 year old trainspotter all over again. Roll on tomorrow.

Yes, I can imagine it was! I'm forcing myself to wait for a couple of days mid-week running on the NYMR when, hopefully...things won't be quite so manic.

Just rejoice that she's back in any colour green. I'm sure apple green will come in due course. We'll just have to be a bit patient.

Looking back over this thread, it makes me laugh that we've just had the "how much of Flying Scotsman is original?" debate, followed by a debate about whether or not she is painted to correct shade of green.

Of course, the best way to check whether or not her green is the right shade would be to take a paint sample and compare it to City of Birmingham at Thinktank. She is the last engine still painted in original BR green paint. Being a perfect time capsule, she is one of the most reliable sources of information we have about what engines were really like in the age of steam.

This is why it frustrates me that we keep seeing people calling for her to be returned to steam - again and again and again! There are two other Duchesses that are good for being steamed, but if you destroy 46235's paint scheme, and start making repairs using modern materials and methods, you destroy her "time capsule" quality - and you can't recreate it.

Sorry to go off-topic but it illustrates the point perfectly!

Staying off topic, every time one of us says that a loco is carrying the wrong livery, we get told, "It isn't important - it's just a coat of paint!"

That makes me feel old, when I saw them at Kings Cross as an 11 year old spotter there were no double chimneys or blinkers anywhere to be seen.

I well remember the A3's before they had the German smoke deflectors. I thought that their fitting improved their looks tremendously and still do but that is only my personal opinion and I'm not really that bothered. I'm just pleased to see it running again.
