BTW - interesting to note that RTT names 60103 as "The Flying Scotsman" on its timing list today - normally main line steam is referred to as a diesel locomotive hauling 455 tones.

Scotsman glides through Offord Cluny with grace, while being chased down by the media ! The BBC chopper obviously trying to out do everyone ! Hope you enjoy.

Yes they ruined what promised to be a great run and it was good between the stops for mass trespass. Heaven knows how the train crews felt. Some on the train were a bit fed up with the delays up but well done Mr Riley and the NRM for getting 60103 ready for today. I can only imagine the hard work involved to see her pulling 400 tons at 75 mph WITHOUT a DL and looking quite superb

Nice footage! I'm sure that you (and the other vid guys out today) expected the intrusion from the sky though. Can't wait to see the full footage of the chopper shots!

I wonder if we would have had a brand new A3 (and cheaper too!) instead of the A1, and an A1 being built now instead of a P2?

I'm not an expert but that looks like a highly illegal bit of flying to me.

Thanks for that Mr Y, probably not funny enough to make you "owl" with laughter. You may have seen that I got sent to the "Naughty Corner" for being tasteless; might change my avatar to a pic of Frankie Boyle. Glad to see that FS had a good run, apart from the loonies who were trackside and the loonies in the helicopters (I didn't say choppers!). It was never going to be a day for the true enthusiast except that those who were there are now entitled to wear the T shirt (available 25 Feb 2016 from NRM price £49.99 inc p&p).

Great location ruined by Helicopter trespassing on the railway - well it looked like it was almost on the tracks!!

Well done anyway Liam and thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,

    Alan

Still a presentable shot, and you've got another 10 years to capture it in sunshine :)

    Rubbish! It's a splendid shot. I wasn't there, so it's 100% better than anything I took!

This spotty schoolboy of the 1950s knew very well the origin of the A3 names. I and most of my friends had collections of Wills cigarette cards with sets that included famous racehorses as well as locomotives.

It's a fact of life that with the NRM wanting to get the maximum publicity, things like a posse of helicopters was inevitable, did anyone honestly believe that they would not appear. Those who want the perfect videos and stills will not have long to wait as the media circus has probably already moved on. and the sun may shine all day.

Lovely shots. Was that the Scotsman branded 225 running ahead, and do you think it was deliberate?

As others have said, really looking forward to seeing the helicopter footage at some point. Scotsman documentary in the pipeline you think?

Marvel at the sound of three helicopters on the first clip! Fortunately they had disappeared by the time she got to Retford.

Well done Liam. I've been to that spot twice myself, but each time the train was either coasting or braking.

As I posted earlier in this thread, it may not be as illegal as you think. Helicopters are governed by slightly different rules to those governing fixed wing aircraft.
    "Some rules regarding low flying.
"b. Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

    c. Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

    d. Helicopters. Helicopters may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph B or C of this section if the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface. In addition, each person operating a helicopter shall comply with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the Administrator."
