Why not! David was an old school driver & stories of him & his ilk have been the staple of messrooms for 150 years for the edification of wide eyed firemen & cleaners!

  8. I have it on good authority that "there are supplies at all stations or can be ordered from 01643 704996".

Perhaps give another call to that number?

    Thanks

There doesn't seem a day where it's possible to ride behind every loco.

Sunday 6th and Saturday 12th have all eight locos running.

Still no news on 44871 or a replacement yet. This is going down to the wire somewhat!

  14. Latest news update

Unfortunately it has not proved possible to make arrangements to move Ian Riley’s Stanier Black 5 44871 to the WSR. However Andy Forster ,the WSR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer, has made an arrangement to bring Stanier 8F 48624 to the Spring Steam Gala in its place. 8F’s ran over the S&D in the final years and sometimes appeared on passenger trains including 48309 double heading with Standard 4MT tank 80043 on a special excursion train on March 6th (48624 will not be changing identity).

This will only be the second time that an 8F has run on the WSR and it is over 20 years since 48773 spent a summer based at Minehead. Thanks go to the Great Central Railway and the owners of 48624 for making the loco available for the Gala.

(Thanks to WSR's Andy Forster and John Simms for this update)

    I agree a super replacement for Ian Riley’s Stanier Black 5 44871 is the Stanier 8F 48624.
I never had the pleasure of seeing this class of locomotive working on the S&DJR, as in those days I was living up country in Buckinghamshire. But I do have fond memories of hearing them with their distinct "clanking" noise hauling fifty wagons plus trains up and down the WCML in the Berkhampstead area.
I attach two photos of 48264 from my collection, these I took when I visited the Great Central Railway in July 2014, so everyone knows exactly what the 8Fs look like. As you can see 48624 carried the fictional British Rail Crimson livery back then and I shall certainly be looking forward to seeing her working in the BR Black livery that she carries now.
Robin, no I don't see why there aren't many days that it possible to get haulage from all the locomotives at the Gala. "££Ching££-££Ching££" Hang on, I do now, my dormant business side of my brain just woke up. All the best to everyone for what I know is going to be a Great Gala.

The 8F is a good compromise, and well done GCR and owners for making her available at short notice. I like smaller-wheeled locos on preserved lines - they sound as though they're going faster than there really are. :)
