Early in our relationship Domestic Facilities Management put on Land Girls. Early on I moaned about the presence of MK1's Only to be trumped later when she pointed out that they were using the wrong Mark of Spitfire in an air display scene...............

No, I'm the same too, I look at our Purchase Order Numbers at work and derive such joyous entertainment value from identifying loco. numbers amongst them. It relieves the boredom of working at the dump in which I do...
I've always said I should have been born around 1935 too, to witness proper steam and proper vehicles...
Saying that, if my Dad had got his finger out when he and my Mum were married in '63, I may have been old enough to have seen the last days of steam... As it was I didn't arrive 'til 1970... Bugger.

    Richard.

Erm, because it's an imaginary magical locomotive...? There was already a description in the book saying it was red with a tall chimney and looked "old fashioned", and the person in whose head it was imagined (JKR) liked the look of the Hall better than the other options offered.
Hogwarts Castle has done a lot to interest kids in steam, and help the West Highland line, and frankly the loco in question is much more distinguished now that is was as a generic Hall.
Oh, and is looks best in red (subjectively)..!!
Anyway, Jubilees - look great in red, and green, and probably blue or umber too. Anyone fancy either of those?

In this digital age, there is no need to actually paint an engine in the wrong livery. It can be done with modern photo software, any colour you like. I'm not good with that sort of thing but, if anyone is..... Let's see a blue Jub, maroon A3, HR yellow Hall. No harm done and stops real life vandalism. In 1985, when SR did the City Of Truro hoax, they had to actually paint one side in BR black. There was uproar of course. Then they had to return it to the correct livery. No need for all that work now, just Photoshop it.

I wouldn't say that the Hall looked particularly old fashioned - not by the standards of steam locomotives. If JKR wanted and old fashioned loco, surely 3440 'City of Truro' would have been better?

Hold on, I just remembered the kerfuffle when she appeared in BR lined black. Imagine it running nicely painted in red!

It looks a bit older than the first loco used for Hogwarts, 34027 Taw Valley

Almost as bad as the Hall that wants to be a Castle... this is the West Country that wants to be a Merchant Navy! ;)

Erm, its all out of her head... If she thinks the Hall looks like what she imagined, she's right!
I for one am jolly glad, I think it looks great. Entirely subjective, so no point telling me I am wrong...

At the time, the GWS were approached by Warners/Bertelsmann with a view to taking 5051 on a "major European tour". I was asked to put in a price for repainting Drysllwyn red, with the suggestion that I could pretty much quote what I liked as funds were nigh-on unlimited. Don't know why it fell through, but it was a hot topic on site for a few weeks.

For an 'old fashioned red engine with a tall chimney' MR158A would have fitted the bill perfectly, a pity they didn't choose to restore her to working order!

I'm afraid that 158A would have virtually no earning capacity, so it's a fairy godfather bequest job.:(

I think 158A might struggle with a school-length train up the West Highland.
