WSR Mixed Traction Weekend 10-12 June 2016

Discussion in 'Galas and Events' started by West Somerset Wizard, Mar 30, 2016.

The WSR's 2016 Mixed Traction event will have a S&D theme.

Diesels on the Somerset & Dorset - 10 to 12 June
    2016

Details should appear on the official website soon but meantime check out the news page on www.wsr.org.uk which has the same information.

Now, that's got me thinking about "diesels I saw on the S&D"...

I have already been in touch with the WSR Special Event Planning Team to remind them of the below, which has come into the enthusiast conscience recently. It would be interesting if the Engineer's saloon on the WSR could 'join the party'.

Folks will remember how responsive the WSR SEPT were over the S&D Gala.

Any more photos folks would like to see recreated?

    Headboards?

Any visitor locos? Or just home fleet.

Would a class 50 had been used on line stayed open.

Does anyone have an idea which steam locomotive will be running on during the event, will it be one of the 7f's?

I'm not sure 53809 would still be there then. 53808 or the 4f maybe considering the theme.

Under supervision I was briefly allowed to take control of an 08 shunter travelling from Writhlington colliery to Radstock North !!
The train consisted of coal destined for Portishead power station. North British class 22s or Hymeks normally hauled the coal trains from Radstock West to Portishead via Frome and Bath.

After the S&D closed to passenger traffic I was also allowed a cab ride in a Hymek loco hauling a demolition train. I travelled from Midsomer Norton to Charlton viaduct in Shepton Mallet. That was the last time that I travelled south of Radstock over the S&D until a few weeks ago when I revisited the S&D railway heritage site at Midsomer Norton. That brought back many happy memories. <BJ>

Cant do this with out being negative so...

This is without doubt the most stupid theme ever,
Why do we need another theme, cant we have one gala where X amount of locos from any area come we have 3 days of them running no theme the end of,

why is the only visitor a 66 which 1 has worked before and two is boring as hell,
again its mixed traction cant have diesels on full rakes, cause tbh the diesel hauled diagrams arent worth it cause we are often left with load 3 and no buffet in the summer.
(personally havent done a diesel outside of a gala since 2013)

This is what happens when you let people who arent bothered about diesels plan things,

if it wasnt for the fact 832 was going home and I've got a lineside pass I wouldnt bother,

I expect the only reason this will make money is because 832s leaving,

A quote from else where this doesnt look like its gonna be popular people are more interested in paint drying and other diesels that weekend,

Says it all with the quote of "after the very successful steam gala......." TBH Diesel enthusiasts are not interested in station name changes and themes, we want a decent run out behind decent traction making a bit of racket. home fleets fine , having steam out takes the p**s slightly, everywhere else can have a diesel gala but we have to have a mixed traction event.... if people dont plan ahead and turn up on a diesel gala they should either put up with it or go/stay at home,

    to sum up

    Pros
    Diesels on full rakes,
    Cons
    Dmu out
    a Class 66
oh the theme worked for steam gala so we will do it for diesels
    having to have a theme,
steam out during a diesel gala,
Having people who have no idea about what Diesel enthusiasts want , Planning a gala for us.

I;m sure there will be more but Im outof ideas currently

Only reasons for attending are home fleet of 9526,7017,1010 and long term visitor 832.

Requesting 66757 because of its name when it's already worked two preserved railways so of almost no interest to those interested in 66s sums up Wsr lack of knowledge in the market.
Just hope the rostering on the timetable with irrelevant freights ,dmus and 1661 isn't the killer.
As for the stupid renaming of stations ......

    OK

Your comments so far noted. The pattern for this year may be set.

But if you were designing the 'perfect' diesel Gala on the WSR on another year, what would it look like?

Rather annoyed that the Missus and I can't attend this year, it's a week latter and we're back in work. Normally we get to go at the end of the half term break, but this year sadly not. Looking forward to the Warship returning back to Bury for our big diesel bash in July, hope some of the WSR diesel fleet may visit, who knows at this stage?
Have a great one whatever you run, I'm sure it will be good.

Is the topic of designing a perfect diesel gala on the West Somerset Railway open to all if so i would like to express my bit.
    1. Have new engines that have not visited the line before.
    2. Take note from say the Swanage Railway and the Severn Valley Railway at the events / number of visiting locos for their galas.
    3. My Dream lineup for a event on the WSR for say a diesel gala would be the following.
D6732 from the North Norfolk Railway, 50027 Lion from Mid Hants, 40106 Atlantic Conveyor from East Lancs, 50017 Royal Oak from Boden Rail.
45112 from Nemesis Rail, a 57 from drs, a chiltern railway 68, 37057 from colas, 47798 from the NRM.
    4. maybe the return of D7018.
    5. Borrow 08377 from the Mid Hants and run her on the norton shuttle with D4107.

    Many thanks
    YRM

Home fleet plus no more than two visiting genuine 'preserved' locomotives. Consideration when rostering to a hydraulic replacing a hydraulic and a sulzer replacing a sulzer at each end of the line. (Many diesel enthusiasts are quite happy to sit on the same set all day and let the locomotives come to them.) You can only be on one train at once anyway.

Possibility of three round trips from each end (i.e. some tightening of the timetable)

I do sometimes wonder if a less ambitious approach should be adopted. I would be happy with a couple of sets diesel hauled all day, one with sulzers, one with hydraulics, on a couple of long weekends each year rather than the current one weekend.

There is a much greater emphasis on 'mileage accumulation' with diesel enthusiasts than steam enthusiasts and this needs to be taken more on board.

I will draw all comments to the WSR's SEPT's attention.

The fact that I am usually to be found working Swanage box late turn for the Swanage diesel gala will hopefully establish my interest in the subject...

    Anything from the home fleet plus visiting engines from classes 14901, 17, 20, 24/5/6/7, 31, 37 (EE, Ruston or Mirrlees engines), 40, 41, 50, 56 and EE-engined 73.

The 'what might have been' scenario gives a wide possibility of traction. I spent a lot of time at Bristol in the late 70s/early 80s observing, and my thoughts are that whatever used to work Bristol - Portsmouth, Bristol - Weymouth and Interregionals could just as easily have worked the S&D. So that means classes 31, 33, 37, 45, 46, 47, 50 plus dmus, thumpers and 33/1+4TC. As far as freight is concerned, Mendip stone traffic used 37, 47, 56 and 59.

If the 'Radstock Project' had become a major heritage railway, then there is no limit, as many preserved railways today provide permanent homes to diesel classes which never ran in their area, and the locos which are visiting the Swanage Gala in May (class 20, 31, 40, 46 and 50) could all be legitimately used!

    Prototype hst would be nice..

I'm hoping for at least one 50, but guess there's enough home fleet diesels

    Full agreement with Peter.
    There are four markets-hydraulic, sulzer,red pen,EE
The homefleet covers the first two, a virgin 66(as on the line unused at 2015 event or say 08650/947 from Whatley-not 66757 again, or indeed the return of 7018,would satisfy the red pens),therefore an EE loco also required, considering the location probably a 50 or 37/50 from Bodmin.
Doesn't require fantasy convoys of 10 locos from 10 locations between Strathspey and KESR many of which requested are out of service or unavailable.
