    Has anybody got any information on the shed allocations that 5972 Olton Hall was based at during her career on the GWR and under BR ownership.

    The Wikipedia article for the shed allocations iv just put together but im now trying to work out where she was located during her GW days, iv looked inside what books iv got but cant find much info so im wondering if anybody has any information from her GW days of where she was allocated to.

    It sounds as though you're assuming that it moved around a lot, but maybe it didn't – f'rinstance Didcot's 5051 went to Landore new & stayed there until going to Neath in '61.

    RailUK.info adds another snippet to 5972's history in the form of 86C (Cardiff Canton) in 1948 – I presume that means it was allocated there at the stroke of Nationalisation, but was probably transferred earlier.

    I am afraid some of the published allocation information is not correct. 5972 Olton Hall was allocated new to Carmarthen (CARM) in April 1937 and remained at Carmarthen (87G) umtil Feb 1951 whem it moved to Laira (83D).

    The lcomotive allocation registers for GWR and BR(Western Region) are held in the Public Records Office at Kew (except for the 1933 register which is unfortunately missing). This is the most reliable source of allocation information. I have found that a lot of other published information is unreliable.

    5972 Olton Hall was allocated new in April 1937 to Carmarthen (CARM, later 87G). It remained there until transfer to Laira (83D)in March 1951. Subsequent moves were:

    84E Oxley Oct 1952
    83F Truro Jul 1954
    83G Penzance Sep 1955
    83D Laira Nov 1958
    86E Severn Tunnel Jn Jul 1959
    87A Neath Jun 1960

    88A Cardiff E Dock in store Dec 1963 to April 1964
    Barry Docks for scrap in May 1964
