    were they just sunk then at the end of the first world war?somewhere in Portsmouth Harbour, I would think its very unusual to sink any boat inside a harbour, or anywhere near any approaches, i would have thought that any captured vessels would have been sunk out in the channel, or towed up to whale island, and dismantled for scrap, unless they had a further life as royal naval vessels and somehow got hit by enemy action in Portsmouth and sunk then never recovered. edit just googled it, both were broken up after being beached at whale island. used as gunnery practice then sold for scrap

    Might have been a surprise to a young archaeologist but most of the old salts knocking about Gosport or Portsmouth have always known what the remains were.

    One or both were used for gunnery practice. They were then tied up and the upperworks eventually dismantled. I suppose it was uneconomic to extract the lower hulls from the mud and they were left to rot.
