Disappointed by lack of visiting locos but it gives the home fleet a chance to shine.

Which is good lets hope this isnt a sticking plaster on a broken leg scenario though.

I truly hope you are right for the long term future of the railway they must use this gala to bring in new enthusiasts to the line instead of relying on the same people turning up to the same events, as well as hopefully bringing in some new blood on the volunteer side that might be under 40 there is a lot of grey hair about and thats not to denigrate those who volunteer now but in the long term there must be a younger team to hand it all over too

It's a shame that an innovative group of diesel enthusiasts don't club together and start their own fledgling preserved diesel railway (preferably in the west country). It would be on a par to what today's grey haired guys did at the end of steam. The railway could start with a short stretch of track with a group of diesel folk running their diesels up and down to their hearts content. Gradually the railway could be extended, carriages sought, stations, signal boxes, toilets and car parks added. It sounds a really good idea to me. Go for it boys. <BJ>

Doesn't that describe the Mid Norfolk Railway (apart from the West Country part)?

It may have started out that way but when I made a visit most trains were steam hauled.
The MNR website appears to be very enthusiastic at present towards steam traction.

''The Mid-Norfolk Railway is pleased to announce its Summer Steam Gala from June 24th until June 26th. This year’s annual steam gala promises to be another great MNR gala, with an intensive train service, visiting locomotives and real ale on all trains all weekend''.

The Mid-Norfolk Railway is pleased to announce the first visit of LMS 6100 “Royal Scot” to the line, courtesy of the Royal Scot Locomotive & General Trust.

''The Mid-Norfolk Railway operate steam hauled train services every year during the summer months. Steam trains operate from Saturday May 28th until Sunday September 18th each weekend, sometimes with diesel trains and our mid week steam services run on Wednesday’s & Thursday’s during the School Summer Holiday’s in July and August''.

By the same token a lot of these grey haired people are retired and therefore have free time to volunteer. If you work 40hrs a week, have kids or other interests you might find it difficult to volunteer.

Very true but in the future the retirement age will start later and later. Unfortunately this will have an impact on the availability of volunteers. <BJ>?

why? When we have the WSR local with such a good varied diesel home fleet. Still like there to be a 50 or 37 on the line tho

To eradicate the conflicts leading up to Mixed Traffic Weekends.

I'd like to add that one of the finest film clips I've had this year has been of D6575 on a 13 wagon goods train passing the bubbling stream at Castle Hill .....I LIKE DIESELS and the WSR needs diesels. Intelligent criticism is fine but what I don't like is continual whinging from certain individuals of how the railway should run their galas and how the DEPG should use their locos. <BJ>
