When you say diesel inside is it definitely behind the loco or is there a chance it will be on the back?

Gut wrenching news for everyone concerned ! The worst case scenario is a diesel on the inside, from a linesiders point of view that is !

Does it really matter where the diesel is ?

Wherever it is, it'll be assisting :-(

Oh yes I forgot, a diesel on the rear would be out of sight on lineside photographs;-)

It does if you don't like diesel fumes coming in the windows...

I think this depends on whether the diesel will be considered as part of the motive power or just as another unit, for example, to provide ETH. If it's part of the motive power arrangements then I believe it has to be up front -no debate.

If it's on the inside it will do a lot more than it would on the back ! What about last year on day 1, the Brit was on the front and the diesel was on the rear.

Oh dear. 46100 doesn't really need assistance with 11 carriages until Newton Abbott, but I bet the logistics are difficult. Maybe they've reckoned the water consumption on sharing the load... Could the DL still take its booked l/e path as far as Exeter, then attach to the rear for the South Devon banks? Is there time/space to make such an attachment? Then again, WCRC and RTC will have thought of that already... Ho-hum

Not necessarily. The weight is the same where-ever the 2 locos are. However - if they need to conserve water, then the DL may need t provide as much power as the 5 would have...

Not judging by some of the recent tours where the diesel has been on the back!! (I guess best case scenario would be for steam to be working hard up front, which is no doubt what we'll get,but still a massive downer. Can't be helped though sadly.)

Ray has been told from his Operation Manager that the diesel is on the inside, and diesel all day on Thurs, he won't know what happens after that as his part in it ends at Crewe on Thurs

I now wish we could send 611 to your rescue.

So would Royal Scot have gauging issues in Wales?

Let's hope that the problem is not serious enough to merit the loco being withdrawn from GBIX. Today is Monday and it's needed in Edinburgh for Saturday onwards to join its mate. Scotland without double headed 5s - and you do need both - would be quite a disappointment on top of the first few days. Here's hoping that the Riley team can work their magic.

I wonder if 45407 can be scrambled to cover some of 44871's duties? I suspect not - first priority will be to get 44871 home and see if she can be fixed in time to head north on Friday.
To be decided... B&Bs booked in Bodmin and Ulverston; can probably cancel sister's sofa in Bristol if necessary.
Good grief! If the Duchess won't fit on the Marches, what chance has 611?!! Got any spare, mainline certified S160s fired up and ready to go?

Hey, look on the bright side, at least there wont be a shed load of exhaust beating down the side of the engine in the NW wind at Crofton.
