I'm sure I've seen somewhere it was King George VI (NSR 69) that was nearly saved, which somehow ended up with no 2 frames.

I saw this locomotive on the A1 last Wednesday and wondered where she was off to. (Couldn't get a photo as I was driving). Now I know. Thanks, all, for the details.

Interesting; Is this the start of a new policy? Are there further transfers planned?

Not a policy but a collections and stewardship review.

Can I have the Midland Spinner? I'm also still hoping the FfR will give me Earl of Merioneth when it's withdrawn. I'm open to other offers.

This is actually the third steam locomotive to have been de-accessioned from the National Collection.

Some years ago NORD 628-230 D116 4-6-0 Built 1911 (1980-1439) passed to the Nene Valley Railway and subsequently moved to France.

More recently CEGB 0-4-0ST "EUSTACE FORTH" RSH7063/1942 (1978-7007) passed to, interestingly, the Foxfield Railway.

So not the start of a new policy but a continuation of an existing policy. It should also be noted three diesel locomotives have also been de-accessioned in addition to c60 other items of rolling stock.

Agreed - when I was attempting to preserve D2 / 44002 in 1977 I spoke to John Coiley then NRM Curator at York who advised that (a) the NRM would not seek to preserve items already preserved elsewhere (b) where possible the NRM wanted to see artefacts preserved in the locations where their rationale for preservation was most determined (c) the NRM will seek to assist potential preservation projects where it can but it will always be on a temporary basis and second to any projects determined by the NRM.

The relevance of (b) s that the NSR No 2 has now been returned to the Staffordshire area under the care of the Foxfield Railway; in a similar vein the Class 502 trainset has been returned to Merseyside where it is now undergoing long-term restoration.
The relevance of (c) was that had I continued my project the NRM was prepared to store D2 for upto 6 months to allow time for a permanent home to be found.

In the case of D2 the case was made (and agreed) that being the only Class 44 to be officially authorised to operate at 100 mph it was worthy of preservation but the subsequent preservation of 44004 / 8 meant I decided not to weaken these projects by proposing a third and the project was quietly laid to rest. I often wonder if I did the right thing.

But - to reinforce the point made by Peter Hall, the NRM policy is long-standing as it seeks NOT to duplicate projects in the preservation field and is happy to consider local transfers where suitable arrangements can be made.

Very interesting. Thanks for that Fred. It does beg the question if some items in the collection - such as the SECR 4-4-0 - would be better off joining collections such as those at the Bluebell Railway (H Class, two 0-6-0 tender engines, three P tanks). But if that logic was applied en masse the collection wouldn't be as interesting at York itself.

It would be nice to have them all together. But being pragmatic, I don't think it would be in the best interest of the loco, at least not until we could guarantee permanent undercover storage to at least the quality she enjoys at York, without compromising storage space for our own locos.

Whereas at York, she is well protected and also helps remind our northern brethren what an engine should look like ;)

You're very heavy of express locos and light on freight and mixed traffic locos....if that's the policy can I have 2818 or 9400 instead of Lode Star please (both duplicated elsewhere.....) I promise I won't bring it home to Ireland and re-gauge it ;-)

Whilst I think it's great that the loco is going to Foxfield for restoration, I'm not personally so sure that the National Collection divesting itself of the only surviving North Staffs steam loco isn't a bit of an odd move.

Lets face this loco was never going to be restored by the NRM far better to let it go to somewhere historically accurate and as stated it will be returned to steam sometime in the future on a line which has a good industrial flavour i look forward to the day when it steams and pulls a rake of wagons up Foxfield bank

Absolutely, but I don't understand why it was not merely placed on long term loan as most on here assumed when it was first announced, and is more usual with this type of arrangement with the NRM? Not complaining, as I said earlier, I'm delighted that No.2 will be flying the flag for the NSR, but just curious as to why it was done this way. Perhaps that's the only way that Foxfield would restore it, if it was owned by them?

There's also Austerity tank 'Respite', which was deaccessioned donkey's years ago. So what's the current status standard gauge of industrial/military steam in the National Collection? I make it the Hetton loco, 'Bauxite', 'Woolmer', 'King Faisal of Iraq', 'Teesside No.5', the fireless, and I'm sure I'm missing at least one.

Anti Walkden bias I suspect, 'Respite' being an ex resident too ...
The recently restored austerity NCB No. 66 (HE3990/65) at BRC also slipped the net of the national collection even though it was the last standard gauge steam loco built in the UK until 60163.

Do bear in mind that I am a fully paid up member of the Industrial Railway and Industrial Locomotive Societies before anyone accuses the NRM of an anti-industrial bias...
