I must confess the idea of seeing a NSR locomotive in its traditional territory, complete with coaches from the same railway does excite the historian in me. It all looks like a very positive step for the locomotive, the railway involved and the NRM.

Those who have seen my postings on NP with regard to NRM matters will be aware I have been in conversion with curatorial team for several years with regard to the collection. As a result I have what I believe to be a very good understanding of what is and has been part of the 'National Collection'.

With regard to WD 'Austerity design' 0-6-0ST HE 3696/1950 'RESPITE', this was never part of the National Collection. It was acquired by the NRM as a source of parts for the IRON DUKE replica and subsequently sold on. As mentioned in https://www.national-preservation.c...tion-and-other-questions.679219/#post-1443746 WD 0-6-0ST 75133-138 'King Feisal of Iraq' is currently at the Flour Mill Workshop whose website says "This 1944 Hunslet ‘Austerity’, which belongs to the National Railway Museum but is on long-term loan to the Flour Mill, is awaiting a heavy general overhaul.". Whilst currently sister locomotive HE3850/1958 is currently on loan from the IOWSR and on display at Shildon.

'BRADYL' (South Hetton Colliery) and the 'Fireless' are both at Shildon. The fireless is on display in the main hall whilst Bradyl is in the Hackworth works and can be viewed on guided tours.

BAUXITE is on display at York

WOOLMER is on loan/display at the Milestones Museum of Lving History, Basingstoke

'TEESIDE No.5' is on loan /display at Streetlife Museum, Kingston-upon-Hull

I don't think there's any need for that - Peter was giving info that is relevant to the thread.

Whereas I rather think that the tone which he chose to adopt in response to my post was condescending and entirely uncalled for.

Quite so. I am just intrigued as to why a change of ownership was part of the deal whereas loans seem to have sufficed in the past. Perhaps @Anthony Coulls could advise?

Quite agree. We're not blessed with many locos from the LMS constituent companies so this will be a welcome addition to the operational fleet in the fullness of time.

Tone is so very difficult to discern through the electronic word. I have been caught out a number of times myself. reading back through Peter's post, it appears to me to simply be relating his position, his knowledge and the information required. Nothing more.

I accept, from your position, a different context is possible. But it does not always follow that the perception we have of others and that they post is always correct.

I agree - I see nothing in Peter's posting that implies he was being condescending.

Did this one belong to the NRM, as it was acquired by the Hexham Rolling Stock Group and was on loan to the NRM at one stage.

Here's a little preview of a possible future scene, albeit with a small conflict of periods between locomotive and rolling stock. (Photo D. Scragg)

More recently CEGB 0-4-0ST "EUSTACE FORTH" RSH7063/1942 (1978-7007) passed to, interestingly, the Foxfield Railway.

"EUSTACE FORTH" is shown in NRM/National Collection records as accession number 1978-7007 which indicates it was taken into the collection in 1978. One presumes that in 1978 ownership was transferred by way of donation, transfer or perhaps payment of £1 of government funds. The relevant documentation should confirm.

The route to acquisition has not always been straight forward and in some cases items have seemingly just appeared with no paper trail that can be followed in later times.

Thanks to those who have offered support today. I do think it is important for the true facts regarding the National Collection and other NRM rolling stock to be given where confusion exists. Many myths have developed over the years which are continually being repeated. I do not aim to be condescending and apologise if I have given that impression. I do believe it is important to make it clear what my position is and that is what I was doing, not everyone knows who I am despite using my own name on this and other forums.

Yes, Eustace Forth was given to the NRM by the HRSG and it was transferred to a group based at Foxfield.
As per NSR 2, full process was followed and the locomotive has a positive future, having received investment that the NRM was not able to give it.
Like I said, this is part of a wider Collections Review, which is ongoing.

Anthony, is it possible for you to give an indication of the criteria for an item to be de-accessioned? I'm sure that you will have concerns about the world coming knocking on your door in search of their favourite item but hopefully most of us a reasonable beings!

Yes, I am afraid that the knocking has begun. Please folks, do NOT come asking for stuff - the process is not that simple.

Each item in the collection is being individually assessed on considerations such as condition, stories, relevance, how it fits in the next 20 years development of York, Shildon, Leicester and other partnerships. There's a lot of thought going into this and it's going to take time.

My last post for the moment - on the process and I've made it more basic than it is:

Our criteria for disposal are - poor condition/duplication/unsuitable for collection/more suitable for another museum
If an item is considered for disposal, I then make up a case which I present to our internal Board of Survey, where it is peer reviewed by colleagues from the NRM and across the Science Museum Group, and searching questions are asked.
The Board may then recommend disposal or they may refuse it - I have had both
If it is approved, then the case goes to the Science Museum Collections & Research Group for ratification or otherwise
It then gets taken to the Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board who may make comments or recommendations
Then it goes to Science Museum Group Trustees for their approval and sign off

If Trustees sign it off, we can then offer it to a suitable recipient, who may or may not have already be identified.
Items for whom there is not a readily identifiable recipient go here, where the process is outlined again:

    http://group.sciencemuseum.org.uk/object-disposal/

I hope that makes sense and explains that it is not being done on a whim. There has been a big review of signalling collections in recent times and there will be more. It's all about sustainable and responsible management of the collection.

I am curious about the 'other partnerships' you mention Anthony (yes I know you said you your previous post was a last post :D). The three places you mention are all north of the Trent and many of us live well away from them. I visited York, two years ago when the A4's were gathered together but it is a long journey, expensive and requires accommodation - it cannot be realistically done in a day.

Don't worry Alan, there's a lot of the National Collection in the South already :)
Bodmin, Yeovil, Didcot, Mid Hants, Milestones, East Kent, Colonel Stephens Museum from memory...
