Opening the doors on 40 years.
It is 40 years since the High Speed Train first came into service and to celebrate, St. Philips Marsh is opening its doors. On display will be a unique collection of locomotives, both diesel and steam coming from all over the country as well as rolling stock from the GWR fleet.- see link to Flickr for latest news of likely exhibits. Others will be confirmed nearer the time. The unveiling of a special power car livery will take place at about 11.30am with a special guest.

Looking forward to this as myself and my boy and his friend are going and will meet up with another mate there, the last time I went round Phillips marsh it was to take pictures of the EPS 37's that were there and that was a long time ago

A message to attendees from the organisers says:

Unfortunately due to various operational issues beyond our control, Rood Ashton Hall, The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Tangmere will not be appearing at the St Philips Marsh Open Day.

I do not know what the 'operational issues' are.

Dunno but it takes the shine off the openday just a bit. General run down and decline of the hobby.

    Agreed.

Disappointing, especially for those with advance tickets.

    The explanation is unfortunately bland.

    Disappointing yes.

Need to have a moan? Not really. It's 2016 the fact that these events are happening at all is amazing!

I am also pleased the event is on and will be there with my advance ticket on Monday.

However, I think I am entitled to be disappointed, and to express my disappointment that three of the exhibits that were part of my reason for making that advance booking will be absent, and with little real explanation of why not.

I may not know a lot about the working of steam traction but I have volunteered with it for 30plus years and am well aware it's availability cannot be guaranteed. This is something the Railways I have worked with cope with regularly at Galas and Events and have to work hard on occasion to have a 'Plan B'.

Once again, I cannot see any sign of a 'Plan B' here and if anyone from the organising team is reading this, an explanation would be a courtesy.

I hope I would be thought to be constructively critical, as opposed to 'moaning' or hysterically complaining, as we often see on social media.

Hopefully an exposition of whatever problems have caused the difficulty will strengthen future such events.

No need to moan, just sort it out.

Thousands of tickets sold to families expecting lots of steam at a day out are going to get 1 and lots of "bland" excuses for the rest.

just adds to the bad reputation the hobby is already acquiring. It's all a bit of a shame really, the hobby endured decades of being a laughing stock to the population, cash starved it's built itself up to becoming respectable industry. The last two years it's becoming a leaky boat again, and once the tipping point is reached, it's doubtful anyone will be there to save it.

Nail on the head, with other commitments in my life taking more of my time now, combined with all the cr*p over the last 18 months, my enthusiasm for this hobby is really on the wain now, rarely extending beyond train simulator and the occasional gala it's been that bad, if you can make what was a hardcore enthusiast that passive to the hobby, what are your doing to joe public ?.

If I haden't booked advance then I would have given this event a miss given what it promised and ended up delivering, Given 34067 has been dropped as well of news of VT's "new" TOC seems to suggest who the guilty party is as to the non attendance of these three, certainly not helping themselves to win back trust and goodwill it seems

As I said on another forum the other day this attitude of "we should be grateful for what we have" is not acceptable anymore, if tours and events are now 80% joe public rather than enthusiasts, do you really think trying to guilt them into accepting something substandard like you do with enthusiasts is going to work ?, you need to deliver or people won't turn up, certainly this event promised 4 or more steam loco's and has delivered 1, are you going to be brave enough to tell the dad of three who shelled out a lot for tickets he should be grateful for that despite the obvious truth he's been ripped off and misled ?, you might be able to fob off mr enthusiast like that but joe public won't stand for it.

My Dad and I were going to attend this event.
The event website to be fair has been stating for some time that 34067 was not attending. This didn't bother us as it's not one of our favourite loco's but we were enticed by the steam line up of 4965, 5043 and 46100. I have been checking the website regularly to monitor the ticket availability and was disappointed to find that Tyseley's finest would not now be attending. There is also a note on the website saying that some of the diesel line up has been changed from what was stated.
It's a long way for us to travel and we are worried that there will not be any tickets left by the time we get there (last time I checked the website nearly all the advance tickets had gone). We will make a decision tomorrow but it's looking unlikely that we will go.
