I worked out (rather roughly) that the WSR train to Minehead was still more efficient in Carbon emission terms than driving..............

What about a 'we hate fitters' thread where we propose recreating the worse possible locos to work on, ditto for drivers/firemen and the accountants?

 

I think an LNER J39 might feature on such a list but I'd still like to see a replica..

Only partly why - it's also because quite a few lines have rather more resident locos than they need.

 

It wouldn't do for pre-grouping, surely? Didn't Gresley convert them in the late 20s?
Mind you, an original NER 4-4-4T would be unique!
(And it couldn't run in BR black....)

 

If that's true - and I'm not querying it - what is the rationale for building yet more locos?

How about the A6? less valve gear but more crankpins between the frames though.[sigh]

 

Well it's more a case of the locos are often all at the heritage railways that have been around for a long while. Locations such as Ecclesbourne, Churnet valley, GCR (N), Mid Norfolk, Wensleydale, Weardale, Pontypool, Oswestry, are hardly full of Locos to be overhauled (apart from industrial)

The Holden F5 will be a useful engine for the East Anglian lines when it is finished. Looks like a handsome little engine

 

But someone already suggested the Leader, which would certainly win for fitters, firemen and accountants...

 

I remember some years ago Adam-Box being mightily amused as the Super D sloshed my tea all over the QB as we left Minehead so how about the 'most unsuitable for dining trains' category
