Bulleids never give a completely regular 6-beats-to-the-bar, but if there's a problem, I expect Crewe can sort it out themselves. They've done a good job on 46100's valve events, by the sound things.

It's got three separate sets of valve gear so it should sound even.

I thought Bulleids always sounded slightly off beat, think it's something to do with the inclination of the inside cylinder (sure I have read that somewhere).

35028 ran offbeat for years when you look back at video from the 1980's and 1990's. She was set to perfection though after the overhaul she had before taking up the Pullmans contract. Beautiful beat from the exhaust when she is working hard.

Yeah true - I'm just going by how it sounded straight out of the workshops in 2014 - it was as pure and even as it could get like a sewing machine!

46100 sounds great I was just being messing about I'm sure Crewe will do a fine job :)

Heads up for a special evening train at the Gwsr gala on the evening of Saturday 28th may. 35006 (subject to full final testing) will work a 14 coach train topped and tailed with 9f 92214. The MN will be on the north end facing the correct way.
Gala tickets from the Saturday will ensure your seat. The timetable will be going up (minus locos at present) in the next week. The plan is for the loco to have a lay over during the early afternoon when it will be available for footplate access.

Detuned Bulleids have two outside admission cylinders and one inside admission cylinder.
So they may more likely to sound funny than some other 3 cylinder locos.

A report in the new issue of the Railway Magazine says that both 35022 and 35027 are going into storage at Crewe due to the backlog of work; 60532, 5029 and 60019 are all in the queue ahead of the Merchant Navy sisters.

Odd choice to bring the overhauls in house when there isn't capacity for the foreseeable future and they are already with a capable contractor. Shame because there is potentially a lot of work for at least one MN as soon as possible.

I'm sure if someone was to come up with a pot of cash Ian Riley would overhaul 35009

I'd love to see 35022 and 35027 back on the main line, but I guess that even the most ardent Bulleid fan has to concede that making the unique 60532 a priority restoration for the Hosking set-up is perfectly understandable. At least we'll have 35028 back on the main line before too long, with 35006 enjoying a more leisurely life in Gloucestershire and who knows, maybe 35018 willl appear complete at Carnforth before too long.

Still, I'm sure that the time for 35022 and 35027 - and 35009 for that matter - will come before too long.

Let's hope that 35018 doesn't come back in Midland red!

How about fully-lined BR Black then? After all, the MN's were originally authorised as mixed traffic Locos... It would also be interesting to see a BR-Black air-smoothed Light Pacific too!

    Coat on, taxi already called!

I'll just be glad to see it working again. Red, green, blue or black would all be an improvement on its appearance compared with the last time I saw it:- 35018 Barry.jpg

I remember when IR was rumoured to be buying 35018 in the magazines a few years back and it was said it would be turned out in Lined Black (and 35009 when completed would be Express Passenger Blue). I hope we see 35018 soon.

I asked Riley a while ago about 35009 and it still for sale so don't expect anything to happen with that anytime.

As much was I would love to see 35018 return as a chain driven merchant navy it would put a chain in the works of 35011s efforts.

35006's evening test runs feature on the GWSR's steam loco blog here for those interested, very close to public running now. If you can't make it for the gala or aren't keen on crowds I see she's rostered for the Tuesday after the gala too on a normal running day. Also the 2 days before the gala have a TBD, so possibly there too? Just speculating there, no inside knowledge.

34052 Lord Dowding hauled its first trip today with the football special from London to Southampton. I caught her at Fareham crossing the viaduct.

    News from SLL:
34072 257 Squadron; boiler expected in July after a longer than expected boiler repairs, work will then turn to this to get it operational by the end of the year.
34010 Sidmouth; parts are coming together and a change in decision will mean it will use its own boiler currently on the Severn Valley Railway. Restoration at the earliest completed by 2019.
34028 Eddystone; will be overhauled in parallel with Sidmouth, the boiler will leave soon and go to the South Devon Railway for repairs and the frames will go to Tyseley.
