With respect I think you're being slightly over sensitive. Sticks and stones and all that

Had they managed to polish out all the scratches from the run down on thursday? Shown pictures of extensive scratches to the paintwork all down one side of the train as a result of poorly managed line side vegetation (in the Acton area I think was mentioned). One of the carriages had only left the paintshop that morning! I suspect somebody won't be happy if they need painting again...is that another NR failing or is it somebody else's responsibility to deal with encroaching trees etc.

It's NRs responsibility but I think it's low priority except after years of delays due to leaf fall some bright spark came to the conclusion that you don't get that problem if there are no trees and some of the more notorious streches of line, Sole St Bank for example, have been cleared.

To be fair, this spring has been a bit weird. The last Tornado shot I did, I specced out the location two weeks before the day, it was clear and easy. Upon arrival on the day, access was damn near impossible and half my view point had disappeared under fresh thick verdant trees and vegetation.

    The stock looked very good.

Definitely didn't spot any bad scratches.

The MK2Ds slotted right into the rake.

Yes. Yesterday was a good show put on by all and the market probably would sustain the odd premium trip like this one. However don't let's run away with the idea that the pool is a bottomless one. Even the Belmond Pullman has limited its steam experience and, of course, if you own the locomotive and the stock it does make the financial model a slightly different one.

As for the potential new market carrying out some research and being put off, if they are Internet/Google/Trip Advisor savvy then I am sure they will know enough about discussion forums to realise that some comments on such places should be taken with a pinch of salt.

But aren't negative comments about diesels on the back doing all the work part of the sort of thing that will put people off? Especially when they come with the subtext, sometimes apparent here, that the passengers are being short changed if there's a diesel at the rear.

When I've been on a railtour I've not been greatly bothered by a diesel on the back, because I can't smell the exhaust (and to me that's very important!), unless I'm unlucky with carriages I can't hear it, and frankly it doesn't make that much difference to me whether the steam engine is hauling all the train or only the front half up the steeper banks. Other people's mileage will vary, and fair enough.

Seems to me the diesel on the rear is much more a problem for the lineside photographer than the passenger...

Wrong. Plenty of us who travel do not like being shoved along by a diesel.

    Three thoughts.

Start a thread elsewhere please if you want to discuss the main point you are making. It deserves an airing but not on the What's Going On thread.
You probably need to talk to someone in one of the organising businesses who actually risk their own money on such things and then you will get a sense of where the market is and how it matches your perception.
The Palace steam charter had a number of factors that made it work. However, only one person will know whether it actually made money.

Was it ever planned as a commercial venture designed to make money? I suspect, (but dont know) the answer to that is no, that it was a gesture (call it publicity stunt if you must) and financially merely designed to cover its costs.

As Wayne said, the diesel on the back could not give any assistance. In the early days, I used to think that 67's were pushing DBS tours, such as the VSOE, but they made it clear back then, and Wayne has repeated, it is there purely for ETH. In the unlikely event that "34052" needed assistance, there is a process for this including stopping the train and getting the driver in the correct cab.

    Sarcasm yet again!

Actually just noticed, 99Z & MrKnowun have already remarked about the quoted post from you know who.
So it's not just who me is getting fed up with his bitter attitude against other members who DARE to speak out or have their own opinions.

I'm slightly puzzled by that - is Wayne saying that there is no one in the diesel in normal circumstances?

Somewhere in this thread on a supporters forum it was confirmed by someone involved that the ticket prices were effectively subsidised by Jeremy.

The SD card in my main HD camera corrupted just as she was approaching the station, didn't even get the whistle, luckily though i took my old picture camera for a spare going away shot i didn't intend to use but in this case included it in this video, just had to happen at the best time, ah well plenty of luck for next time
