Back at The Forester, it looks as though NR has struggled (even on a Sunday) to sort out a path. Three hours from KGX to Peterborough including a water stop is a long, long time, even if you factor in the two pick ups.

No doubt, but I have promised the RTC that I will smile on the journey and not rant!

No good rushing about on a Sunday ,the signal boxes at the level crossings between Peterborough Helpston Jnc and Manton don't open until 12.noon

That's a good point; presumably the path out of London does not have the benefit of recurring every hour throughout the day, otherwise there's the possibility of a later departure time.

The GN stuff is pretty much a clock face timetable so it must be finding a path on the two track section in amongst the VTEC stuff that is the problem.

NR managed it in 2015 even though it did not run. And they got to Peterborough in a sensible time.

Yes I was at Uffington level xing, the first box on the branch. The first train of the day was and is ,the 11.53 from Peterborough, booked by Uffington at 12.02.Both DMU and steam were 10-15 min late , I thought they would have DMU by first ,but no the unit followed at caution behind the steam. The signal man arrived 11.30-1145.

I'm not doing the leg, but evidently the trip is expected to average c.27mph between Stevenage and London on the return. Abysmal- one would almost think NR are trying to 'time' steam off the network. Also, notwithsanding on-the-day changes, it seems my decision to get on at Stevenage, rather than Peterborough, has paid off; I'm not a member of the Branch Line Society with my track-related rigour, but I'm probably the next level down the scale.

I'm sure that the West Coast crew will be up for it but a layover mid-journey like this does absolutely nothing for the fire on a loco. Add to that what happens if you are then 'blessed' with mediocre coal, the fire dies and you could end up with a dead mass of clinker like a concrete slab in the firebox through which you get no air when more coal is added. At least we are talking about one of the best steaming boilers on the main line but nevertheless it is hard work. However on the bright side, if a few years back someone had told me that in the 21st Century I would have had every example of Bulleid's finest out of King's Cross - i.e. an unrebuilt and rebuilt WC/BB plus a MN - I would have probably thought it impossible.

Just realised that the late return at KGX tomorrow leaves me with an unpleasantly quick dash across London for the last train home. NR doesn't make it easy for anyone do they?

Not seeing any paths for the diesel out of KGX, so I assume it will be going along for the ride unlike previous tours !

A very shiny 34052 got dragged back over the flyover at Harringay about half hour ago by a 57. Full rake of maroons except blood and custard support coach.
