There was indeed, and it was because they had the only CME smart enough to learn from what the GWR was doing without having to have it rubbed in their face by a loco exchange. [think I need a flame proof raincoat]

Others a far better placed to comment but handled well the N would probably take the Jacobite in its stride. Its one of those, aside from the locos that have been tried on the route, would be a good type. The LMS class 6 moguls would be in the same group of potentially well suited types too. all hypothetical and another thread. As someone else said it would be lovely to see it happen though.

Martin I am sure there are more than enough capable staff at Swanage that will be able to become main line support if required. Now if anyone wants to become part of something special and ground breaking that will be happening in next 12 months or so you will be more than welcomed.

I've always thought that was the really admirable thing about Maunsell: happy to learn from others, and to give his engineering team a free hand to try their better ideas. But enough discernment to know when not to!
I'm by no means well informed about Southern matters, but I've only ever read nice things about Maunsell himself. He was much respected and liked at Inchicore.

Hughes/Fowler and Stanier variants are both 6P5F
When 42765 entered ELR traffic I recall a now renowned Stanier 5MT devotee gleefully pointing this out on the cabside to Paddy Smith's crew to wind them up.
Never heard a bad word about either a mogul or a five mind.

The LMS classed them as 6, but sure BR had them rated 5MT?

The initial BR classification was 6P5F, later 5MT which is more realistic.

I'm sure it will be a popular loco to tour the country! It is after all (imo) the most important loco outside of the National Collection.

I can only see one option and thats a very limited short jounrneys based on Swanage, Bournemouth Eastleigh Salisbury that way you have a destination, and hopfully tourist appeal if picking up at Swanage and Bournmouth , turning can be done at Salisbury, using the lavistock triangle and if the tour starts / terminates at Swanage, you dont need to turn the engine, unless your taking two bites at it, the only other option is Weymouth Dorchester South, then use the former GW route

Just as an aside here, is the turntable at Swanage big enough to turn a U or N?

Can I just remind people that the reason that the Swanage are "mainlining" this loco is for their own services. It sounds as though the full "kit" is being fitted with no additional deregations (there are about 80 for any steam loco to set wheel on the network anyway!) but one can only assume this is because of feedback about whether any such deregations would be possible in these circumstances. This appears to mean that the loco may be capable of being used further afield, but it doesn't mean that Swanage will be looking for a wider Safety Certificate or Access Contract than needed for their own operations.

Past experience tends to have shown that heritage lines that get too involved in the wider "mainline" scene find it a distraction from the "day job", so I can't imagine that Swanage will be rushing to extend what they aim to do.

That said, I know people love "what ifs" in this game!

Wouldn't it be nice to get the bay platform at Wareham up and running, including a run around - I know that would mean moving the signalling equipment, so can't possibly happen until the next re-signalling in the area, and may also need some land bought off of the Camper Van garage.

But an N simmering at the bay whilst the SWT EMUs pass would be very likely to attract more customers to the SR

What extra "derogations" do NYMR 'Whitby capable' steam locos have compared with full mainline locos?

Think GSMR and OTMR are not required in the normal sense, though happy to be corrected on this point, AWS and MT276 isn't it ?.

GSMR is required on the Esk valley.
