I think you are mistaken here FS is no 'fatter' as you put it than the other locos you mention, the cab of a MN and Britannia are, I believe 9 ft wide, an A3 and A4 are 8ft6 plus the width of the external footplating. The crucial difference, I believe, is that an A3 cab projects down below plaform height so the clearance between the cab side and coping stones is the deciding factor. The footplating on an A4 sweeps down and only the rear of the cab is below coping stone height.
This is all theory and maybe someone more in the know can confirm this or otherwise.

I'd been idly wondering, after the very public humiliation that the gauging dept suffered over the Waverley route debacle, whether this might be their subtle way of taking their revenge. :Hissyfit:

The timings still haven't appeared in RTT yet. I guess they will put them up in the morning. Luckily a reliable source has given me the hush-hush info. I need. It's just handy to have the RTT schedule to keep track of 60103.

They would have to be forecasting what crowds appear at what stations, as not all of them have restrictions.

John - I think this cab thing has taken on the mantle of an NP urban myth. If you look at any photograph - I know, there are so few to choose from! - you will see that the cab is well above platform height. I do not have a clue what or where the problem is but if it is a cab/platform interface issue then you would be unable to open the train doors.

You could well be correct on that. All I know is that if I were the NRM I would be wanting to know exactly what the problem is with Flying Scotsman before this goes much further. It is singularly unhelpful that the loco is generating problems in the sheer number of locations that it is currently. And there is a new route to York coming up soon.......

Yes exactly the same except that the evening one terminates at Victoria at 2333 as no other special is using P2 this week.

The restrictions I quoted were only the ones I thought important for those filming, the full list includes speed restrictions or prohibitions at about 30 stations. These are all for platforms except the bridge near Syon Lane and one just outside Victoria. Last week at Worplesdon I was on the up platform so didn't have a very good view but it looked as if the front buffer beam may have been close to the adjacent platform. Whatever the problem is it is obviously a very serious one as I have never seen so many restrictions for one train as these Surrey hills trains and the Salisbury/ Southampton ones.

Anyone know roughly how long they're likely to be hanging around at Victoria this evening? Wondering if it's worth popping up there later…

Cheers, ECS to Victoria now on RTT

Can't say, but in my experience tours going in that late don't hang around for more than 15-20mins, especially seeming as there will almost certainly already be a diesel on the back to pull it out again...could be wrong though

RTT shows a couple of service trains using p2 at Victoria between the WCRC arrival and departure times (not that RTT shows the latter)!

Crikey. This is akin to a slow boat to China. What confuses me is that FS absolutely flew through Twyford on the down fast a couple of Saturdays ago with speed well into the 70's and yet Saturday after this, it trundled though the up fast platform clearly due to a platform clearance restriction. Surely the clearance for the up fast would be the same as the down fast?? Wouldn't any realignment of track clearances be constant for both up and down on the fast lines? As a spectacle, for FS to craw through the list of stations above, we might as well see her on prerserved railways at 25mph. So disappointing.

Indeed, but still with a service train using p2 while FS is there!

The Railway Magazine has quite a lot of stuff this issue concerning the seemingly confused and badly-planned gauging process in NR.

There's no reason to assume that. Remember that it is prohibited from passing Thatcham in the up direction but not in the down direction.

If you look that service train is run as required and didn't run today

The Q train I understand, but the page on RTT I was looking at had a Ramsgate arrival on p2 while FS was there. The refreshed page now shows the Ramsgate on p1.

No - there is a long standing restriction at Culham for down trains hauled by Halls - walking pace through the platform. No such restriction on the up platform

No restriction at Dorking West, shot through there as tho it had a rocket up it's 'arris. Earlier they held back the Woking stopper for 3 minutes at the signal protecting Byfleet Junction to allow the late running FS out in front of it
