Doesn't the tender come right out to that dimension too? Being a corridor tender there doesn't seem to be any lip at the bottom.

There is no lip, as you call it because the body of the corridor tenders is slightly wider than the non corridor type so there would be no difference if it was coupled to a NC tender. I believe it still has the one acquired with the engine by Alan Pegler, a 1928 built tender first coupled to Harvester and acquired in 1963 from 60034 Lord Faringon. The later A4 corridor tenders were similar but with no external beading

How feasible would it be to make the running boards a tad narrower? And how acceptable or unacceptable to the NRM?

The much discussed Stanier/Cox report did suggest that play in the valve gear would manifest itself in a different unevenness in the beat in different circumstances. Who was it who did that splendid analysis of the wave forms? It might be instructive to run a few more. Indeed I'd be interested to find out from real engineers whether they think a techniques quite unavailable to engineers back in the day might be helpful in valve setting.

I have the impression that NR only cares about the routes carrying the big containers.

The answer is retractable steps as on the Pendolini, not making the loading gauge smaller.

'twas I. Had a trawl around YouTube & couldn't find anything that leapt out as sounding 'off' - that said I found very few where FS was doing anything other than clipping along nicely, so not much by way of clearly defined beats.

Best I found was this video which finishes with the departure from Basingstoke:

60103 starts well enough, then loses its feet a bit, but has found them again as it passes the cameraman. Waveform from that bit:

    60103_Bstoke.jpg

Looks & sounds pretty even to me.

Happy to repeat the exercise if someone can put up a link to it sounding off beat.

As another user of Cool Edit (but only the 2000 version, not the Pro version:() I've had a go. On several clips there's enough difference so you can hear that it's a 3 cylinder loco, but it hardly shows on the waveform display. But I did find this one and here's the waveform display from around the 25 second point in the video. The peaks at a bit under 4 per second are full revolutions of the wheels, for a speed of about 55 mph. You can't really hear or see six beats per revolution, just a louder sound once per revolution.

Edit: Clever website this! I only included the URL for the video and NatPres produced the picture.

I know this will have been done to death, but 300 pages, but does anyone have any idea how long the A3 will stay this shade of green.

Also is it likely that she will stop being shoved around the nation at some point. Is it pot luck which tours are dieseled. the KX Newcastle and ret was solo but seems odd one out because of that.

Just seen FS in the Willesden area, looking smart and the full red rake looks cool with it.

I finally found the Haynes Manual for 4472 / 60103 today in WHSmith Guildford after watching the A3 pass through the station [IMG]

It's a fascinating read and makes you appreciate even more the excellent work that has gone into the latest overhaul.

Does it explain what to do when it doesn't fit on the tracks?

It has been done to death and in its current configuration there is no other shade of green or any other colour for it.

If you prize "authenticity" for this particular loco above, say, representing the class, this loco's own history post-BR, or fun...
But agreed we aren't going to get anywhere by discussing it further.

I think the NRM have a remit to restore as authentically as possible, hopefully when it's on preserved lines it will run without the deflectors to change its appearance

Does it also explain why it always has a blue metal box with a Union Jack painted on it always attached to it a few carriages away ?
As mentioned above the initial ECML run(s) were the rare exception.

I originally ordered my copy with Waterstones some years ago. My order was also cancelled. You still can't order it from their website but there was a copy in the shop in Guildford. I bought mine from WHSmith as I had some gift cards to use up. I am very pleased to have got my hands on it at last.

Not strictly the question. Was just wondering whether we had been given the timeline, given that I understand that York wants it in appla at some point. Accuracy or non I really dont care, Once I have my pics of a BR green A3 they can paint it stripper neon yellow for me to travel behind for all I care.
