80 late at Ferrybridge but 26 of those can be accounted for by overstaying stops at Kettering, Melton Mowbray and Barrow Hill.

That's a rather long steam journey with Flying Scotsman up front and a little helper on the back. Eight and a half hours from London to York will probably go down in the record books. Meanwhile, Tornado leaves an hour and a half later and gets there two hours earlier unassisted. But as they say, it's about the journey not the destination.

Tornado did take the shorter route. And fewer people in the way.

I've shot FS a lot, as you may notice, and with all the issues that surround it, its very hit and miss. Another reason I wasn't prepared to put a lot of time and miles into filming it, its 50/50 superb or disappointing.

Worse when they use that whistle! noise.jpg

Not the results I was hoping for and hopefully the trip isn't overshadowed by 'You Know What' !

I was dissapointed with the conditions and I still think the trespassing at the start slowed down the approach off the viaduct. Will see what results I get on Wednesday.

You do the best with what you are presented with, and that you did. It was still making a noise, it had loads of steam, the wheels were going round and it had some atmosphere. Whats not to like.

Anyone spot something very interesting on the last part of the clip. That actually sounded like a proper ER whistle rather than a squealing cat!! That's more like it. Anyone know what they have done to getting FS sounding like its got a proper whistle??

A guy on the BBC 1 quiz 'In it to win it' tonight has just answered that Flying Scotsman is an aeroplane. Perhaps NRM should consider more publicity to let the public know what it is!

Sounds like it squeeled again towards the end.

Suggests that the whistle, while the chord is being fully pulled, is receiving too much steam and is instead squeezing out a sudden high squeek as the steam escapes rather than allowing the typical 'ring' that the bell whistle should have.

I suspect they have done nothing. It's probably just the amount of steam allowed into the whistle chamber. If you squeeze steam in you'll get the authentic sound although not particularly loud. If you give it the works it turns into the scalded cat sound. I recall a similar problem with 73096 on the Mid Hants and its chime. Give it too much; you lose the pure tone and and get something entirely different. It's possible to do just the same with a MN whistle if you don't control what you are doing. That's my take on it.
