Assuming that the Operating Status codes haven't changed since 1992 (the date on the front of my book!) "B status" is "New Build vehicles which have not received formal Quality Assurance Acceptance Certification and therefore are NOT accepted for Revenue earning Service. Must get authority from Project or Resident Engr before moving veh"

Bizarrely it could be as simple as that. The loco data is entered on the system to trigger the loco movement and a warning flag comes up about an unauthorised vehicle. So all stop, just like that!

Isn't there anyone in authority with a brain between his ears and a bit of common sense who could just say this is wrong and overule it? It seems now everyone is either a jobsworth or scared of his own shadow.

That's the trouble these day's, if people do not do everything by the book out comes the disciplinary brigade with the consequential "YOUR'E SACKED!"
    Seen it all before.

There was the one at Bletchley Park, but fortunately it wasn't controlling the entire Allied war effort!

Interesting thread, this. Spontaneous, bizarre, almost quirky in the way that the story has evolved. Love it. What fascinates me, though, is what it is that interests and motivates those who either view the threads on this forum or actively participate in this forum.

Because this topic has, in the short 36 or so hours since it was launched, attracted 3,600 views !! - almost as many as the cumulative views to date for the original rail tour that positioned Tornado at the NRM. And even more strikingly, no less than 10 times as many views as has been attracted to the Tynesider thread, where yesterday's outing featured a much-hoped-for main line venture for the Blinkered One without the customary helper on the back - something I'm sure most on here would have been delighted to see.

I can't work out whether there is any logic to this, and anyway its just a personal reflection. But I do find this slightly surprising. That's all.

This was the reply on WNXX from Warbo44....

It was a electric / diesel railtour NOT a KETTLE tour. They put separate railtours on for the KETTLE fans so i was extremely happy when 60017 stayed on to take the tour south to King's Cross. [IMG]

Tornado is just an over engineered tea maker but at least it never cost as much as the "money pit" otherwise known as "the Flying Scotsman". [IMG] UK Railtours should realise that NOT everyone likes kettles. So if they were going to put one on then they should put it into their railtour description or at least make an edit note and inform the people that are or have already booked it. So they can make alternative arrangements to avoid being hauled by a kettle.

Quite a few of the diesel cranks share this view ... Not by me you understand..

Except that Warbo44 missed completely the fact the tour was advertised as an electric - diesel - unspecified motive power tour so can have no real complaint as to what ended up on the front of the train at York. According to some on the train the vast majority of those on board had no complaints regarding the proposed use of the A1. The fact that in another post Warbo44 said he would rather travel in a Pacer than behind steam and would have baled out and paid for a ticket home rather than travel behind the A1 shows what a sad individual he is.

The above quote from WNXX does raise an interesting point. I would imagine that any TOC can reserve the right to change or add to the motive power on a trip for operational reasons and this is the 'catch-all' that results in some steam charters ending up with a diesel. So, the intended switch at York last Saturday could not really have been complained about by diesel/electric enthusiasts any more than steam enthusiasts when a diesel appears. However, I guess the question is whether the plan was operational necessity or operational convenience. I suspect it was the latter that would still be legitimate but rather more questionable.

It only goes to show that what seems like a good idea for some people is exactly the opposite for some others. Such are the trials and tribulations of running heritage charters.
