Thanks for the reports and photos, folks. As someone said upthread, this extra vehicle probably wouldn't have been added if the route was going to be over the S&C, but what a wonderful route Scotsman has - her old stamping ground & then the Tyne Valley. A great day out for passengers too, if a little late getting back - but that's a small price to pay, methinks :)

I'm not sure why the conclusion has been drawn that if 12 had been on behind the A3 over the S&C a box would have been added? There have been plenty of occasions where a Class 5 has been over the S&C unassisted with 12 on and not seen to struggle. Ok, that's as much as you'd stretch to on a Class 5 and times have changed, and the consideration of the recommended working practice with the A3, but would the climb out of Carlisle through Cowran Cutting on the Tyne Valley line not considered more taxing than the S&C anyway?

Well, I was pleased to be proved wrong regarding the diesel issue. As mentioned above, it is a winning itinerary that mixes high speed with some cross-country trailblazing. The return run south of Darlington was something for all on board to savour, and 60103 is clearly in peak condition. We avoided the worst of what transpired to be a bad day on the ECML, with a person hit by a train at Longniddry and trespass at Peterborough.

It's all to do with operating the locomotive within reasonable limits, I think. She was wrecked by being 'pimped', for want of a better word, by her previous owners to get more power out of her; can you imagine the storm that would break if she suffered the same fate now, due to being asked for huge amounts of power for long periods of time? Yes, the climb out of Carlisle is a test, but compared to the "Long Drag" it's short. Personally, I think that this is a pretty good compromise, and who knows what will happen, based on what is observed on these runs? A you say, Class 5s have done some prodigious work, but times have indeed changed, and that has to enter the equation too. Also, something to consider is that those 5s were privately owned, not the property of the State (and thus the people), and also not as high profile as 60103.

Almost by accident I have came up with a couple of cracking locations for a bit of gopro action next weekend.

Golf Saturday, Sunday may end up Panigale chasing 60103 about a bit!!!

I wish you luck with that one but be prepared to be disappointed - 60103 is at Shildon for the next two weekends. Her next Waverley outing is Sun 7th Aug.

That changes it a bit then!!!

Both locations I have never seen before, and if I can the position right, will have a wow factor.

Another great day out with RTC and good performances from 60103. The staff in Dining also made our special celebration just that.

Had this video arrive of the latest run in my YT Subscriptions. Check out the Dog walker at the beginning (34 seconds in) on the foot crossing. Did she even bother to look before crossing? :Jawdrop:
Not surprised the crew were whistling.

That could have been very nasty.
