I wonder what the delay was that held her in Wigan, on time arrival, 12 late departure? Can't see anything obvious on rtt except that she was held until the Glasgow train had passed, but this was not on the schedule.

A stonking northbound run with a lot of sustained high-speed running, a particular highlight being Warrington which was passed at 76mph! Grayrigg was crested at 45, Shap 33.5. The times for the climbs were 14mins 52secs and 6mins 41secs respectively. The overall time from the foot of Grayrigg to the top of Shap was 26mins 43secs.

    In response to RalphW...
I think there was a bit of a delay boarding some elderly and/or disabled passengers which resulted in the Glasgow being put in front of us.

Sounds like a very competent climb with a manageable load. So, if you mean Milnthorpe as the foot of Grayrigg, then the time of 23 min I've had with Tornado and 11 on suggests that the crew did enough today to make it interesting for everyone on board but without over-stretching the loco. That's sensible.

Yes I made it Milepost 13, it was definitely a sensible bit of footplate work. Didn't catch the crew but think it was Ron Smith on the regulator.

Milnthorpe is at 13.5 miles so let's say that the equiv Tornado time was just three minutes quicker. Either way a good piece of work. I think us timers have to accept that whilst histrionics are good for the record books, that's not really the name of the game nowadays. But neither is having a steam train pushed up Shap by a diesel so hats off to WCRC for doing the right thing today.

Very good northbound. 68/14 Carnforth to Carlisle. Slow start but 45 over Grayrigg, 76.4 before Tebay and a disappointing 33.6 over Shap not pushed at all but slipped at 37. Ron Smith and Simon Webb. Even better coming back. 48.4 min Thrimby Grange 57.3 Shap and 68.1 Grayrigg. Very fast everywhere and missed out on even time by 8 seconds Wigan to stop outside Crewe including some slow running. Steve Chipperfield, Mick Rawlings and Nigel Barber. Best day out with steam since 5029 on 9th May 2014. Who dares wins

What a great day for steam, in this hot steamy weather. No problems with 46233 or 60163, 75 through Warrington and finally, not a diesel in sight. Horrah!

It doesn't get much better than retaining the fast all the way to Crewe and Balshaw Lane in both directions, the memory of bearing down on Warrington in the 70s both out and back will stay for a long time. A great day for steam, thanks to all involved. :)
