    46100/46115: Liverpool-Manchester-Standedge-York-Scarborough and return

What's the betting that this will run over Diggle?
RTC are taking bookings from pick up at Huddersfield
I thought the largest loco now allowed over Diggle is a Jubilee?

There is a path over Diggle route for non Trans-Pennine services Stalybridge ##:42, Huddersfield ##:05 midweek so maybe on a Saturday this may run

    Any thought?

46100 is at the MNR gala that weekend, RTC website states 46115 or 46233 if unavailable.

I have a feeling this one will not run either as advertised route or with locos specified due to Network Rail gauging, unless this has been sorted out

This has been postponed again until 20 July, and acting on the advice of WCRC, will now be routed via Runcorn, Altrincham and Hope Valley to prevent further issues. The reason cited is engineering on the original route via Standedge.

Whilst this is is a not entirely surprising blow (last steam over the top was in 2010?), the revised route out of Liverpool seems interesting, and they've given plenty of notice. One wonders if this early update is due to NR's pillorying over Scotsmangate.

Now moved again to the 30th July.

    We've had to cancel now.

The first third of the new itinerary is actually quite interesting. There aren't too many steam trips heading over the Mersey at Runcorn these days as they tend to go via Broad Green, whilst Hartford curve is very rare for steam, as mentioned by Ralph on another thread. Also, the Stockport avoider which takes the tour to the junction with Hazel Grove chord seems a bit new for steam. Every cloud, providing it runs...

Now Cotswold Venturer has been cancelled, I wonder if 46233 will end up picking this up instead?

Rumour is that it may be Leander.

Tickets have now arrived for this. 05:58 departure from Liverpool with 45690, which will come off at South Milford on the return for a more direct route back to Carnforth, as with the East Yorkshireman in June.

I get the feeling this might be something to do with trying to reduce the number of hours the support crew are spending 'out on the road'- and who can argue with this aim given what goes into keeping these things going. If this locomotive is the only one available for that day (45699 having injector attention; 46115 will probably have its tender wheel issue sorted out), then it is equally understandable why it has been assigned to this duty.

Will probably try to see if I can get to Liverpool in such a way that I can bail out at York on the return, thus saving me another trip across the Pennines.

All the above, plus the fact that it is now Leander, is reason enough to travel. In 2016, this is the only trip that provides steam from one side of England to the other.

It's perhaps a sign of the state of steam in the south when I have to book on this to try and get something authentic. The early start will make it a bit of a marathon day and that's without the overnight accommodation. The last time I had steam out of Lime Street was with 48033 a long time back so it will be good to revisit Mount Pleasant Tunnel etc. The hope is that West Coast leaves their diesel in the platform but, in 2016, that seems only to be a priority when it is logistically and operationally possible. So we shall see.

Aren't most steam trains assisted out of Lime Street? With "only" a Jub on the front, I'd expect the DL to assist from the rear, in which case, you'll probably have its company for the rest of the day

Quite a sensible load of 10, not that that has much influence if we have a tail gunner up the bank.

Which is highly likely, since it's needed from South Milford on the return.
