The diesel was left in the platform for IT57 11/8/13 and we had a noisy departure behind 45305 with 11 on.

Although a southerner, I just checked my Ian Allan Combined Volume 48033 is underline so observed somewhere up North. As I started hunting steam as a 12 year old back in 1960, it could be any time up to 9 July 1967.

What was 48033 doing at Lime Street I wonder. Surely not on a passenger duty unless it was one of the classed with balanced wheels and therefore suitable for passenger duties albeit max 50mph, I think.

Also underlined in my book, also a southerner, so ??? 1A or 14A at some stage. Anyway a quick trip to google shows 48033 transferred to Springs Branch probably from Sutton Oak June '67.

48033 was on a LCGB organised Two Cities Limited tour in June 1968. Basically we spent the day shuttling between Liverpool/Earlestown and Manchester by various routes. Also involved was 73069. Details at: http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/.

In the same way that The Tin Bath has an appeal, I am rather surprised that someone like the RTC hasn't thought to try something similar nowadays. But you would need two locomotives and I accept that the routes may now be rather more congested. However there is something rather appealing in being able to pop on a steam train that is running throughout the day between the two cities. Maybe it's too creative an idea.

Apologies for drifting off thread but here's a scan from a not brilliant slide of the 8F at Runcorn with 'The Two Cities Limited' on the return to Lime Street

One of the easier London sheds to bunk along with 14B.

Is that a young Big Al with the camera in ACW's photo?

Bit like the Manchester - Southports that ran every Autumn for a few years, including a certain 4472 one year.

I see from RTT that the diesel to take the train home from Milford comes down from Carnforth so on the face of it there is no real need for one to go all the way to Scarborough and back. We live in hope that the diesel remains at Liverpool until it is needed in the evening to take the stock back to Carnforth. But as we are learning, it is now the art of the possible and nothing is that straightforward any more it seems.

I have never figured out RTT so does anyone have a link to the timings? If it's going anywhere I can get to I might wander along for a look.

Load 10 plus Class 37. Mick Kelly in charge who doesn't expect to have any help from the back. Ron Smith on the diesel who says it only needs to take its weight if that. We shall see.

On time for water stop at Plumley. We had a nudge to get out of Lime Street but all quiet at back otherwise.

I concur... No assistance on the 1 in 115 climb from Runcorn stop. As suspected, a very interesting route to Derbyshire, and a pleasant morning to boot.

The 37 was certainly pushing heartily as the train was between Chinley station and Chinley North Junction

It's a strange one. 45690 probably could have managed ten solo without the DL. Being cynical, what is termed 'operational reasons' is probably a cost-cutting measure to ensure the DL dragging in the stock doesn't need an extra path. However, it means assistance is inevitable.
