    I was on the following HST from Swindon to Cheltenham yesterday and noticed that it had recently rained in the Kemble/Stroud area. The HST seemed to struggle to gain grip on departing Kemble.

    Indeed - what an appalling slide! Were the crew aware and did it have to come off that tour? I knew Bulleids were 'light' footed', but that's a new slant!

    OK - that blows my theory out of the water. As a supplementary question - is the trailing loco through-braked as part of the whole train or does it rely on its own brakes to be applied by its driver? My query is could it provide a dead, un-braked load on occasions?

    Without the diesel alot of people would have had to get service trains home.
    So the insurance policy paid out.

    A general observation: the title of this forum is "What's Going On", within "Main Line Activities and Tours". Nowhere does it state that any form of traction is excluded, and there is plenty of room for steam, diesel, electric, horse, trollies, etc, etc., as long as it is on the main line. It just so happens that it seems most interest in this particular sub-forum is in steam; fine, but the bickering between the various traction enthusiasts is tiresome. There are other sub-forums for diesel, steam, etc., but this particular one is about the main line, where I believe people should be free to discuss any form of traction they choose if it is relevant to the sub-forum without resorting to rudeness, childishness and so on.

    'Westerns' and 'Bulleids' (for example) are both essentially just metal boxes/tubes with their equipment arranged differently to use different fuels. It so happens that I have an interest in anything railway, especially heritage, and would rather not wade through the "box" and "kettle" wranglings to get to the meat of the discussions.

    34046 will probably now return from Gloucester to Southall for repairs using one of the wheel lathes in the London area which can handle large diameter driving wheels (eg Ilford, Wimbledon etc).

    Quite right, I wasn't trying to get into a childish argument, I just puzzled why anyone who had booked on a steam tour would be happy with a Western as a substitute as opposed to any other diesel.

    I missed your response. I agree with some of the points raised and my issue and with others, is that 34098 seems to confrontational on all posts. I disagree about What's on not being totally about steam tours. I think if you look back over the past 5 years, only a handful of diesel tours have been posted here as a main topic. Steam versus diesel is an emotive dual. Yes, some steam fans tolerate diesels but they would most would not leave the comfort of their home if a railtour was passing by their back gardens. I am sure there are other, more appropriate forums for lovers of diesels to visit and share their thoughts and feelings with fellow types. This forum, I feel anyway, is not for them, no more than an avid steam man would bother to post anything on those sites.

    That I cannot answer, but it would seem logical that the train being through braked would include the loco on the back, in fact don't some diesels have to keep their engines running to provide air pressure for their brakes, although vac activated.

    As I understand the braking system on 34052 is not dissimilar to a diesel in that it is air braked loco with auxiliary capability to create a vacuum train brake when needed using an ejector (exhauster on a diesel). In both cases air needs to be created by the loco compressor for brake activation.
    No idea what went wrong yesterday but it could be a problem with the proportionality in that the loco brake was applied to a greater extent than the train brakes which is the opposite of how it should occur when the brake valve is applied. The train would then shove the loco on locked wheels a bit like an unfitted train might have done in past days.
    Apologies for any misunderstandings or erroneous assumptions in case I am off beam.

    OK, if the sub-forum is overwhelmingly steam-driven, why not state clearly that it is exclusively so to avoid 'interlopers'. Given, however, that this is "National Preservation - Bringing the Heritage Community Together", shouldn't other preserved traction be entitled to a sub-forum for 'What's Going On - Diesel and Electric', for example? It may be far less used but it would be clear and fair to all.
